Maine training season

Post by spruce mountain »

After a ruff start in July things are starting to turn around. We treed a 130# sow on saturday,Fist bear of the season. It was a good run, they cold trailed about a quarter mile and jumped it and the race was on.They lined it out for a couple miles and then were walking it for about a half hour and then treed it.

Treed another one today,Gunner treed it by him self.It was a real nice race,Just under 6 miles. He had to swim across a pond and he did something I have never seen him do before,Toward the end he went silent,I could see him going thru the woods along this road and I was almost going to call to him but I could tell he still had the track. He went on about three or four hundred yards and caught the bear and treed it.

Nice going Spruce Mtn. That Gunner dog is a dog that wants to catch a bear.I have had a couple that would go silent like that. Now, I am not saying I prefered that, but those dogs sure caught alot of bears. The only 2 dogs I had that treed bears solo on a regular basis, both did that. It did make it hard to hunt other dogs with them.Hard to pack dogs into a silent trailer. Many times I have watched the bear cross the road and listened to the pack quite a ways back. Then a few seconds after the bear had crossed and I was in the middle of saying "they will never catch that bear " , Spot or Spike would come flying across the road not making a peep. A couple hundred yards in they would open and it was game over, bear caught or treed.A few minutes later, the other dogs would catch up.Always wondered if they went silent to catch the bear or try to get it away from the other dogs ???

Now Spruce Mtn., heres something to think about. How many times do you think Gunner has done that and you just never knew ? Good question huh ? I know where you hunt in Maine.I doubt there are very many times you get to watch the dogs trailing because its so thick. We used to debate that all the time with my dogs. I remember thinking that if I didnt have a certain dog out there maybe I wouldnt tree a bear.About then the others would tree a bear without the superstar who had decided that moose or coyote was the game for that day !!!

He has always run ahead of the other dogs alot.He dosen't mess around on a track if he can run it he goes out Quick and if the other dog's mess around with it at all they can't catch him.He has alway's given plenty of mouth to turn dogs into this was the fist time I have ever heard him go silent,But like you say in this terain its very rare that I get in on the end of a race.I know that alot of the time he has been catching or treeing the bear ahead of the other dogs and then the cavalry would show up.Thats why I bread him hoping to get some more dogs that could run with him.I kept 5 pups and some are showing alot of promise. These new garmins show a wealth of information when it comes to things like this, they take alot of the quess work out of wondering who is doing what.Your also dead on about the supper star deciding to burn some garbage. The last four times I turned him loose we treed 3 bears and he burned a moose.LOL.
