Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
Anyone feed their dogs bear meat? Not for a whole meal persay but do you on occasion feed them some bear meat?
Re: Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
I have one time fed them some chunks. I just put them on a skillet and cook for a few. They did really good on it I have one dog that I can't keep weight on him with just dry. I had enough to feed them for 2 weeks every other day and he put weight back on and looked really good need to get more.

Thats what I was curious about to if it helped put weight on. I know in the winter my main female gets pretty slim but she is good right now. It would be nice just to keep some in case one of your dogs is having a hard time putting weight on. Also it would be nice to mix some in with their dry food every once in awhile.

FEED A DOG GOOD BEAR MEAT! It had better be one heck of a dog before I would waste good bear meat. I feed my dogs "Diamond brand High Eneregy" during hunting season. It's 24% protien and 20% fat. At $23.00 for a 50 lb sack it cannot be beat. It will put weight on a skinny dog fast and keep hard working dogs fat. It also helps in clean up as the poop is nice round hard black instead of a runny mess. Durning the summer months I switch down to a lower percentage of fat.

Maybe I should switch to that, I dont have runny poop by any means but that would be nice to be able to feed a little less and keep the weight on the dogs in the winter. I feed pedigree and it does the trick for now and is like 21 or 22, might as well spend the extra $1 and get some better stuff. Just need to find a place around here that sells it. i think a feed store I know of does though. Im not saying waste bear meat Im talking more like the tendon meat or the meat thats a little tougher to eat, and a lot of the fat off of the bear. Sorry I didnt specifie that.

I always pitch every dog a few bits of meat , in the field while skinning the bear. Just trying to encourage these misfit wantabees to go catch another one.
Re: Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
Yeah, raw is better for them, less to clean up. Beef fat mixed with their food will put wieght back on them quick after 5 or 6 days of running also. Check your game laws before you get too carried away, or keep your mouth shut about it.

You might try that Diamond High Energy. It cost more but you don't feed as much. I feed my dogs about 1 1/4" down from the top of a small coffee can. I run them three to four days a week and sometimes more. They are all in great shape. Winter running hard feed them a can and your golden.

lots of corn in pedigree dogs can't break it down and it just comes out the other end. diamond is a good choice
Bring a compass, it's awkward having to eat your friends

Thanks for everyones input. I think I got the answers I needed. Im with whoever it says that you should feed them some after you get it, and especially let them rip into it. Makes them want it more the next time, at least my dogs have shown that. Turned a VERY timid dog in to a decent bear hunting machine. He is by no means an awesome bear dog but he is getting better and better each time and is making me prouder and prouder. He will get in there and pull some hair and is fast. His nose is decent and he just loves tearing into a bear afterwards.

Jim - You must be talking about Mundo, LOL. I tell ya what, all dogs that go back to some of the older stuff behind him (on the dads side) are all thin dogs. They look like they have been hunted hard for months and could crap muscle. Thats on the chain. You hunt them and they can drop 5 pounds in one run... They are quick, and its like they naturally keep themselves fit. His Mom can look at bird feed and get fat. Joker is "skeletor" and looked real bad after he got sick.
I feed Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice. So far like it the best. $22 for 40#.
I have always kept fat off the bears to feed to the dogs. Plus all the scraps and the ground bear meat. I just keep them wormed good. Sure helps. Gonna get a nice sized one just for the dogs this year. Just big enough to fit in the freezer, and get a few roasts off it. Anything else is dog feed.

Re: Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
Just for the Crappy ironic salt on the wound from the state of Montana where you can't hunt bear with dogs. The state allows you to turn the bear meat into dog food and when you get your bear checked they even have you take a questionare first question "will this meat be used for 1) Human consumption 2) Pet food ?"
That is the way I found out for our state. It sucks, but now I know what to do with that meat next time I get a stinky rotten pig. We all know how well spot and stock works ...

Re: Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
I dont eat bear meat so anytime we shoot a bear we feed them some bear meat under the tree as a reward.
Re: Anyone Feed Their Dogs Bear Meat?
between us ,family ,friends eating the meat and dogs getting the stuff such as fat and bones bloodshot meat if there is any plus hide for training small pups or have mounted we make pretty good use of a bear .
