Re: mike kemp dogs
Dan, if the truth offends some people, they should by all means, avoid it.
Re: mike kemp dogs
Never seen a kemp dog so I can't comment on that.
I have seen other dogs that have running dog blood and this is my observation. Good fast hounds can keep up with average running dogs for a couple hours on a bear/yote chase. After that they will pull away. Fast running dogs blow the doors off a good hound as far as speed. You can also usually run them day after day and can barely tell.
Our problem was finding one that could hold the track after those 2 hours, stay with the critter when it bayed, treed and had a cold nose.
If I could build an ideal dog it would be this, Mouth of a good old style B&T or Blue dog, nose like the best B&T, Bluetick or walker I've seen, gritt like the better plotts, endurance and speed of a running dog, treed and handled like a cur or smart walker, looked like a redbone, blanketback walker, B&T or Bluetick and acted in the yard like a 10 year old finished hound. If anyone finds a surplus of those, let me know.

Nolte, this is the only thing that I cannot figure out.
stay with the critter when it bayed
I hope you read this. I can find all the rest but this is hard to find. Usually they kill it or nothin. I have seen a few good ones but very few at baying. Cold nose is not a problem but they just dont open on the cold trail for the most part.

Dan; If you were hunting big game, you would figure it out quickly. Coyotes are real game and tough little critters that can give a dog all he can handle in a one on one match-up. A big tom lion will kill the dog before you can get you gun on him. Same with a 250 # sow with cubs, or a big boar with 3" cutters. Grit without brains=a dead dog.

Re: mike kemp dogs
Oh I got it figgered out just fine. Running dogs suck at baying. HAHAH!
Re: mike kemp dogs
Dan,
A lot of the running dogs I've seen would leave a bayed up coyote. Run it for hours and then when it stopped, just sort of wander around. Same thing with bear, if they were there. I should note that my buddy has a running dog mix that is real good on caught critters, barks a lot stays in there real good, but doesn't tree. A different friend had one that was pretty gritty, but was slow and rarely made it to where something was caught unless another dog got it there. Who knows maybe it wasn't a real running dog.
I'm sure they are out there and I've got no doubt guys have some real dandies. I've just never seen any that really impressed me where we hunt. It seems there is always something lacking and you still need a good hound to get it done. I should note that I'm just a half-assed yote hunter that goes when it snows when cat season is done.

Re: mike kemp dogs
hi there, i have watched all the clips and both of the movies. i have a couple of friends that have mike kemp dogs. what is with those kinky ass tails? they curl up over there backs like some kind of husky dog. there are very few things that completely turn me off on a dog. color does not matter, size does not matter, im pretty particular about feet but them kinky ass tails make me sick and i will not own one. i have seen two treeing walkers, one grade one registered with kinky tails in my life i have not been around many running dogs wondering where that kinky tail comes from and why. i know it does not keep them from catching game no matter what you say there will not be one in my yard.

Cocky flag tails have been on running dogs forever. Probably comes from some of the Welsh and Irish blood in them.
Re: mike kemp dogs
i am not talking about a dog just having a flag tail im talking about these tails curl up over their backs like some kind of husky or something. have any of you seen them?

Re: mike kemp dogs
Dan I'm not talkin about what he was sayin I'm talkin about what "fast" meant because "fast" was mentioned. Prob shoulda started a new thread I guess.
Could care less about the dogs, my comments about them were not disrespectful, just observations in reply to the question asked about them based on what I saw on the 2 dvds.
I'm just curious what "fast" is because I thought I had fast dogs til my buddy put his jeep in 4 low, let it "walk" and it passed them like they were standing still...
Wait a minute, they were standing still because I was waiting for them to empty out. Bad example.
Anyways, Yaak cleared it up for me and this week I'm workin' on teaching them to scout out big trees with big limbs while running a jumped bear, before they tree it.
I think he's on to something here.
So maybe we should discuss check dogs now.
I think a real "check" dog is one that runs past the main pack and the quarry, scouts (checks) out an ideal tree, say, 1-5 kms ahead of the race, which the distance is determined by the mood the check dog feels the quarry is in which justifies when it will tree, run back and then lead the quarry and the rest of the pack to that said tree.

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

A check dog is one that tell u what your other dogs are doing.
When your other dogs is running off game he comes back to the pickup.
When it is the right game he is in there running generally at the front.
A check dog is a tattle tale on your other dogs.

Re: mike kemp dogs
Good morning mmm, A few years ago I had the pleasure of hunting with mikes playboy and ready dog's. I hunt only bobcats on the west coast where there is tons of gravel roads and salal, salmon berry, and blackberrys so thick that sometimes a person has to chop his way into the dogs when they have a cat caught or treed. I have to tell you I was impressed with what i saw. These two dogs were bear dogs from idaho that had not been on more cats than most dogs ever see in a lifetime, like the ones that i had at the time. If we were running a cat and the dogs made a loose, if either playboy or ready barked the other dogs better had hurry up and get to them or else they were either going to get thrown out of the race or get behind. What I saw out of them they were honest tree dogs, good locators, pretty good nosed for being bear dogs all there lives, and toward the end of a couple months were a times out striking mine on the rig. What i also liked about them they were thick haired, could handle being hunted in the rain for hours and days on end without wanting to get behind the cab or lay down on the box because they were cold. And by the way Ive never hunted with mike, but I do know he is a dog trainer like myself. If you have young dogs, a person only makes dogs out of them by maximum exposure. This means getting them on the most game you possibly can by hunting them all the time. For the fellas that might try to knock his dogs, just remember talks cheap, you better be ready to put up or shutup if you turn loose with some his stuff from what ive seen they dont want trail game they want to catch it.

Re: mike kemp dogs
Not one post has anything negative to say about them, relax.
Thats good he has good dogs, matter of fact I'd imagine everybody does otherwise they wouldn't be feeding them.
