Where did you get your hound?

Post by poser »

I'm in the market for a good dog. Tired of runnin this "mustang bred trash". Maybe this would be helpful for others who are lookin too.

Just wondering where everyone has gotten their hounds from? For those of you that breed your own, where did you get your start?

Where did you get the good stuff?....even better, have you got consistent dogs from the same people and who are they? What do you hunt with them? What state do you hunt in?

I know there are alot of great houndsmen and breeders on here but there are also alot of great houndsmen who never get onto a computer.

Thanks for sharing, poser

Sam Derringer in south az. Be ready to drop $8000 but they see an average of 50 lion a year in the desert and are a notch above most hounds. He is a gov hunter and hunts alot. The nicest most humble guy you will meet and does not brag or talk numbers. When i bought a dog from him i asked him to tell me about her. He said " Well she will dang sure catch you a lion." I Framed his house for him in exchange for pup training and that dog came back in 6 months in better shape than being with me for 2 years. Super nice guy with super good dogs.

I won't claim to have owned as many dogs as most, or be any kind of expert, but
personally I have had good luck with Lightning Ridge Kennels ( Mr. PacoJack). He has done his homework and is honest about what he has. Three out of the four dogs we have got from his breeding stock have made top shelf dogs. IMO
We hunt Lions, Bears, Bobs and some coon in Idaho.
And if we were talking Mt. Curs Mr. Derril Fry's Stock is hard to beat.

AZ, I have a pup this is a granddaughter to Sam Derringer's Radar. I am going to try and ruin the heck out of that pup and see how idiot proof she is this year. Hope that she turn out.....time will tell.

Pete, I have had a few dealings with Paco in the last few months. I think that he is a good guy and wouldn't hesitate to get a dog from him. (If i had any money) I have never hunted with Derril Fry's curs but have always heard nice things about them.

Appreciate the comments. Hopefully some others will open up with their secrets.

I have a male out of the same litter

I have a pup with your name on it  I have a pup from Poco and Poser and another one coming from Poser and one coming from Van and Chaser. I quess my point is, I am always looking for that perfect dog and I want to compare what I have with what other people are hunting. I feel you will always be behind the game if you are not trying to upgrade what you have.
The line I am running right now I would say is dumb luck. I got 4 pups from a guy in the west here. 1 has been culled his brother was a hotter nosed dog, he did not suit me. The other about the same and one has done me a very good job. 1 out of 4 dogs is not that good of ods.3 of the 4 had the same sire, now I had to decide what made the good dog what he was? That was easy, It didn't come from the sire. So I started collecting and breeding on the lines of the females breeding on the good dog.... Bingo. I have had great results with this.
This last year I have tried dogs from almost every breed and color and some have been pretty nice dogs but most have been culls. I am still open to something better than I am running but I have to see it first.
I too would love to see more comments on this subject because I am just a lucky SOB that puts a animal up a tree once in awhile.

Paco, lol.... i sure appreciate the offer but i'm so puppy poor it's rediculious. Don't know how i went from 2 culls to 2 culls and 13 pups with one more litter on the way. I'm an over achiever when it comes to STUPIDITY! Hope those pups turn out for you. if they dont blame poco.

CDH, i've only seen one pup from Duncan personlly. Wasn't too impressed, but i know he has produced more good dogs then bad by far. I don't think anyone is 100%. And my buddy is just an unlucky sucker. What dogs have you gotten from Eric? I have a pup that is lookin good so far.

Catdogs, Like i said above, I think that Duncan is the "real deal" time tested. Just had a bad experience with one pup. He couldn't keep doin what hes doin if he produced junk.

Thanks for the comments fellas. If you have any pics of your dogs lets see'em. Along with who and where you got em'. If you've raises some great dogs, please take the time to post a few pics and tell us a lil bit about them.

I'd rather read about dogs instead of everyone own personal drama on here.

I had a couple out of his Thunder dog and one out of Buckshot. I liked them all they were all nice dogs. Very easy starters and good handling dogs. I would take another one in a heartbeat if I wasnt broke and if I had time to start a pup!

I got both my dogs from poser (Jason Sorensen). Being rather new to the whole dog world, I would say that I took for granted what kind of luck we had last year. I recently sent a dog to Montana that I am already missing, I hope you are enjoying him Mitch. IMO poser is one of the most honest men around and he loves what he does. For all those that read his crazy ass posts that make no sense (if you don't know him), I would say ignore most of the down talking. He is damn good dogs and knows how to make em work. I look forward to the upcoming year and learning from everyone that is willing to share. Thanks again poser for all the good times...and if you would ever speak normal english when you are posting the rest of us could probably follow you....

I got my males as pups from a government hunter out in Oregon before they cut the funding for his district.

I'd have to agree with poco270 on that one, poser is damn good with his methods of training and starting dogs, it also helps to start with the right stuff and he has seen a lot of different pups from all kinds of lines. As for myself and my dogs I have to give most of the credit to Wade Lemon and Kim Payne for their breading program and the results (two houndsmen that you wont see posting on here) and poser has helped me a great deal along the way as well. Good Times take care. :)

CDH, I don't think Eric has too many cameron dogs around anymore...? He still has some good dogs as usual though. This pup i got from him is half cameron and out of a red male.

Poco and mntwalker.......lol! Boy you can tell you guys are a lil wet behind the ears and don't know up from down. If you guys got out in the world you'd see some good dogs and know what is what. You'd probably cull all these mustang hounds and get a REAL dog. LOL, atleast we keep ourselves entertained fellas and thats what its all about! Lookin forward to this year!

nmplott, what was the goverment hunters name and what type or breed of dogs did you get?

Poser,
I have looked all over to get my dogs and tried many different dogs. The dogs that have worked best for me came from Bruce Warren, ID. Steve Herd in Kansas, and Darrus Martin- Kevin Hall In ID. I run Plotts. I run Bear, Lion and Bobcat. I live in and hunt UT.
