It takes a different kind of hound to go head to head with a large animal that can quickly kill him or her and, do it time and again. As was mentioned before, over very rough terrain.

Have either of you guys seen these dogs in person on a 15 mile race? How have you evaluated their courage? You have me a little intrigued. I still don't agree that they are the only ones developed with no coonhound blood in them.

Oh, and Del Cameron hunted and developed his own dogs, strain, before he started selling dogs for big bucks. Kind of earned his own reputation if you will. He didn't brag on others work for his benefit.

Liontracker,I am also a little intrigued by your comments about distinct characteristics that make a big game hound that coon bred dogs do not possess. My experience seems to be different than yours.I like big game bred dogs as well and own one Cameron and two Cameron crosses.I have also owned and hunted with several big game bred B&T's.Now that being said,I have owned a few dogs that possessed all of those qualities you described but two in particular that are head and shoulders above the rest and they are both coon bred dogs.I'm curious as to how your measuring stick may be different than mine.I hunt a minimum of 5 days week here in Idaho during the bear season.I don't know anyone that hunts any harder than I do.So, I am evaluating dog performance based on how he/she measures up to other dogs when hunted hard day after day after day.Could you give us a little insight into your hunting regimen and how much game your dogs are exposed to on an annual basis so we can have some understanding of what the standards are that you use to measure a dog ?

Big Game issue
UKC is in the registration business. They aren't as interested in the big game stuff because fewer big game hunters care about papers.
Also, UKC wants free articles offered to them. The same story offered to a bigger outdoor magazine would be worth thousands. I have been a magazine editor. If you want unpaid writers you have to really beat the bushes looking. If they paid, the writers would come to them.

Big game bred dogs
I know people out east that import big game dogs to hunt coon. The scuttlebutt around here is that a lot of Del Cameron's original hounds came from John Henneman. Henneman still breeds distinctive hounds. They aren't as furry as Cameron hounds but many are very big. He has some pretty nice hounds.
As for stamina, I think that has more to do with the way you keep and handle them. I have two with stamina that I will match against any. They charge around the yard all day playing, and get roaded a fair amount (15 miles isn't even occasion for a nap)when they're not hunting (our season is closed for several months). The guys who hunt coyote around here generally have dogs in better shape than the guys who hunt coon occasionally and keep their dogs kenneled when they're not hunting. Those coyote hounds often chase all day, every day, on deep snow. The bear are thick here. While they run, if you can't pick up a bear track after a couple miles walking, your hounds aren't any good. It doesn't take all day to tree a bear here.

It does not make a lick of difference how a dog is bred if the breeder is not honest with himself ( her) and get out and evaulate all the traites he/she is breeding for .That is seeing not just hearing and making up the story to go along with what they hear or go along with the torn ears that so often come from other dogs rather than the game they think the dogs are on.

Thats a no-brainer...I don't know of any responsible breeder who does that...of course they are out seeing their traits.

Lol it all matters when raising good hounds! Plus where i hunt at if it takes you 15 miles to get the game stopped you need to shoot all of them cause the dogs aint applying enough pressure!

If the dog aint worth a crap, it doesn't matter how it was bred, it still isn't worth a crap.

So Brady have you seen the dogs go in person or are you basing you opinioin on things you have read? How have you evealuated your young pups?

Mason, I'm suprised an houndsman of your caliber has found time to come off the mountain during lion season. Awhile back you made a post stating that you weren't gonna post on here, and, you were going to let the "internet houndsmen" do "their thing".... Imagine that, you're back

Reed, I am "evaluating" my young pups by scratching their bellies and playing with them; they are 12 weeks old......

However, as they mature, I will let you know my honest evaluations....

Mason, nobody is starting any shit; just discussing our thoughts with out being an ass. I'm glad you haven't sworn off posting entirely. Lol.

Believe me Mason, I'm a big boy who has done hours of my own independent research, I feel plenty good about my investment which, by the way, is quite small in the big scheme of things isn't it?! I'm not lookin' to sit here and argue back and forth about your dogs vs. The rest of the worlds dogs, we all have what suits us, and that's different for everybody. There is nothing honorable or even funny in jumping in every post and being a prick. I believe my hounds will end up being exactly what I have been looking for for years now and haven't been able to find until now. And, I know exactly how my hounds were bred, evaluated, and all the why's behind the what's BEFORE I bought anything. Yeah Mason, no need to worry about me buddy, I'm fine and as I said before, I'm excited to share my pups progress as they grow. It should be a fun ride.........
