Need some advice on starting a pup
Need some advice on starting a pup
I just bought a 4 month old bluetick female and I was wondering if any one had some ideas how to get here started on coons. I would also like to chase bobcats some day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
run some coon drags and encourage him on the coon some scent.

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
if you want that dog running cat dont put it on to many coons it will start running of the ground instead of casting when its on a cat and it will false tree on you if a cat rubs the bottom of a tree. If you can start them off on cats then transfer them to coon, let the dogs figure out they need to cast there nose to run.
Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
What about running here with the old dogs she is wanting to go with them but she will come back afer awhile. And then she will leave again is this normal? I have been trying to fid a coon to show to her but its still to cold here. She was on her bobcat this weekend she didn't know waht to think of the whole experince but she walked to the tree with me. I gues thats a start for 4 months.

thats normal for a young dog it sounds like she has some drive give her a couple months and she'll proabibly be right there with them. one thing you can do is when you get to the tree let the dogs tree as long as you can and if she gets board and wants to wonder chain her up, and talk her up, do anything you can to get her intreasted .
Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
I put her on a coon scent drag this week and she made it to the tree. She circled down wind from the tree and then came back to the tree to find the scent for 4 months I suppose not to expect much more.

TRAINING PUPS
FIRST OFF A PUP THAT'S ONLY 4 MONTHS OLD IS NOT MENTALLY READY FOR CAGE COONS OR RUNNING WITH OLDER DOGS. REMEMBER THIS; IT'S LIKE TAKING A 2 YEAR OLD CHILD TO THE WOODS AND SAY SHOOT ME A DEER AND CLEAN IT FOR ME ALSO.
RUNNING PUPS THAT YOUNG TEND TO MAKE THEM BABBLING IDIOTS AND THAT'S WHERE ALOT OF THE BABBLING DOGS YOU SEE TODAY COMES FROM; NOT GENETICS.
IN ADDITION TO BABBLING IT CAN ALSO START A PROBLEM WHERE YOUR YOUNG DOG BECOMES A ME TO DOG AS WELL.
AT 4 MONTHS OLD YOUR PUP NEEDS TO TAKEN TO THE WOODS A COUPLE TIMES A WEEK FOR WALKS TO GET THEM USE TO CROSSING CREEKS; JUMPING OVER LOGS ECT.WHAT YOU SHOULD BE WORKING ON AS WELL IS GETTING YOUR PUP USE TO RIDING IN THE BOX, LOADING AND UNLOADING AND VOICE COMMANDS SUCH AS STAY-SIT AND COME HERE.
IF YOU SPEND ENOUGH TIME WITH YOUR PUP YOU'LL KNOW WHEN HE OR SHE IS READY FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF COONS. REMEMBER NOT ALL YOUNG DOGS START AT THE SAME AGE; SOME START AT 6 MONTHS AND SOME DON'T START UNTIL THERE A YEAR OLD. WHEN YOU INTRODUCE YOUR PUP TO HIS FIRST COON NEVER HAVE THEM ON A LEAD; LET THEM DISCOVER THE COON AND GIVE THEM TIME TO SEE WHAT THERE REACTION IS GOING TO BE BEFORE BRINGING OUT THE OLD DOG. BEST WAY TO GET A YOUNG PUP CRAZY ABOUT A CAGE COON IS TO PULL THE COON AROUND ENCOURAGING YOUR PUP TO BARK AND BIT AT THE CAGE. REMEMBER PUPS ARE LIKE KIDS THERE TENSION SPAN WILL BE SHORTER TO BEGIN WITH; SO GIVE THEM A BREAK AND START THE PROCESS AGAIN LATER IN THE DAY.
HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU ON STARTING YOUR PUP

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
Keep doing what your doing and for god sake don't hunt her alot on coon, let the pup do what a pup wants to do she will start going with the big dogs soon enough if shes wanting to go now.
As for a cage coon i put my pups on a cage coon at 6 weeks oldif it spooks them they'll get over it after a few kills when they get older.
The best thing to remember when you train a pup though is this is your dog train it the way you want it to hunt, You ask for help and your gonna get alot of twisted up he said she said training tips. Your on the right track just keep up what your doing.

So I don't want to create a babling idiot so at almost 5 months but she wants to go and run around the brush with my old dog. I hate to leave her home when she wants to go. I think as soon as I can catch a coon She will really start to take more interest. My question is some people say to not show her a coon yet and some say to do it . So what is they answer that everyone can agree on. I don't want to ruin her.

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
Brandon, you wont in any way ruin her by showing her a coon in a roll cage. it wont take to long of watching an older dog on the roll cage and she should start right in. I myself dont mess with roll cages much any more but sure used to and never hurt a pup by doing it. It is the best thing you can do with her is letting her run around with the old dog if she will go. later, Andy

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
Twist and I went out tonight this is the second coon for the pups in a week. Things are really starting to click for them. I was real impressed with the 8 week old topper pup that wanted part of the action. For 5 months and seven months they can get to the tree on there own I'm real happy with that. Thanks to the great coach twist.

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
You keep messin with that little 5 month old pup just like you are doing. Like I said it only makes them better it in no way will hurt her as a bobcat dog. I have been doing it for alot of years. I also thought Jeremys little 8 week old grandson of Topper did a bang up job. The only problem I can see is your tree climbing ability

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
I thought for sure you were gonna land on the top of your head coming out of that tree. I had fun both of your guys dogs looked good especially for that age, Brandon I think Rosie is gonna be just fine, keep doing what you're doing and she will be stretching hides real good. Andy, Maggie looks good too not bad for her first tree. I think I got lucky with Cinch, pretty funny watching such a little pup act so tough. I'll see you guys soon, oh yeah Brandon all my boy was saying on the way home was he wanted to go back and ride the tractor, thanks.

Re: Need some advice on starting a pup
Like others said keep messing with the coons. Exposure to game is what makes a dog. Running coons does nothing to hurt a dog. I run my dogs on coon all summer and fall and then switch to cats in the winter. When I turn loose on a cat I don't wonder if I'll catch it. I expect my dogs to be treed with the cat when I get there. Nobody catches every cat they run but my dogs damn sure catch a lot more than they've ever lost and if they don't catch it's because the cat got in the rocks or the track went to hell. It sounds like you are on the right track, keep it up and you'll have a game catching dog before you know it.
Montana Red Kennels - redbones that catch game and hold it until you get there.
