Ya, wow, I did not realize you actually were dealing with low bobcat populations. To me that is what really dictates the need for a great cold tracking dog. Sure feels goood when you can walk out past the mess other hunters made tried to get something going, and then catch the cat.

Just get lucky every now and again. If you are ever in the area drop me a line. We will go make a hunt.

Hey Don, Thanks for the invitation. I can see a speck off on the horizon. I am not sure what it is. but if it is my ship coming in, I will head for your place after it gets here. I will bring some of CJC's paintballs loaded with permanent ink and we can start in on getting your cats branded. You can register your brand, and then if anyone is caught rustling your free range cats... well, you know what they do with rustlers.

Any way, thanks again, and it's kinda funny, the thing I look forward to most is hearing a good cold trailing show.

Thanks for all the talk guys, My name is Jim and I live in Vermont. We have quite a few bobcats around here but I am the guy you are trying to help out. I have spent many hours reading the posts on this forum and a couple of others just to do nothing more than pick the brains of people that are successful at what I am trying to do. I have learned alot and have put some to use. Not that I have been real successful but I am training a pup right now and going to pick another up next weekend. So not only am I a rookie but so are the dogs. Maybe I'll be able to find a finished dog sooner or later to help me out but for now I'm doing what I love and will continue to do so until the day I can't do it anymore. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and I will continue to keep reading it. Thanks again for everything

Jim Meachem if I can talk you out of that second pup would be the best thing you could learn from reading this post as I have said many times if you are just starting out with hounds ONE PUP is enough focus on it and put your whole heart into train it for now if that pup doesnt turn out start with another but not two pups this would be a set back. If you were into the sport for a few years and had a trained hound then this could be done but even then you are still in for alot of grief. I have been doing this for many years and still very seldom have two pups going at the same time. I see it on here all the time where a person starts out green to the sport and is wanting to fill his kennel with a bunch of hounds remember these words ONE GOOD HOUND IS ALL IT TAKES TO CATCH GAME! later, Andy

Thanks Andy. I will take your advice on this one. I don't know what you think about this but I only planned on running the one that I already have on bobs while I would really like to run this new pup on coons for now. I have a twelve year old boy that loves running coons and don't want to take that from him. We run a blue dog on coons now and a plott on cats but am going to see Curtis Walker next weekend to pick up a female plott pup to do this coon thing. Blue dog was in real bad shape when I got her, now one eye is half blind so she can't be competition hunted so have to do something else to keep the boy happy. Trying to keep the future bright for the both of us. Thanks again

my old buddy always said--- dont ever put on a hardwood cat--
i used to laugh at that sometimes -
but he was right alot ,, there isnt alot of game on hardwood ridges when snow is deep
many times, they were just going to rockpilesor ledges to layup -
put on and coldtrail to a hole -

or they would just keep going and going like the energiser bunny -
travelling a long distance- have seen dog trail right over mountain to next road system and never jumped --
more likely to jump them going into softwoods for sure ---i still let go on about any track i can find-- just dont see enough tracks to be too fussy
when the tailgate drops

Ya I herd that there wasn't many cats up there in the north of the state. I am loaded down here. Maybe sometime we can get together and do a little running down here somewhere. I know where a few cats are hanging out for the most part. Just getting ready to send the pup to north carolina for some handling and coon training with a man named Terry from buckshot Kennels down there. Get him to really use his nose a lot more. If I can't run him because of no seasons open might as well pay someone else to keep him in the woods for me.lol

That's right too. I didn't know that this was the gentleman that you were talking with. I also wanted to let you know that shotgun seems to be doing very well on them there black haired giants that you love to run. Man what a mistake it was to let him go. I'll regret this one for a long time to come thats for sure. Talk with you later Jason keep in touch. thanks

Well considering how tight things were as far as money goes, I really didn't have much choice in the matter. Unfortunately he was taken in just a few days from the post. but thats how life goes I guess. Just have to try to find another one just like him. I now have a female who is about four months old and lookin real good. Hope she turns out as well as he did. Talk to ya later
