hog trouble need some advice

Postby huntingfool » Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:41 pm

looking for a little advice looking for a dog that will get a hog in thick thick cover. my dogs arent use to it being this thick and are having problems getting em cought. when you have dogs that have cought hundreds of hogs in more open ground i know its not the lack of good dogs. the only thing i can think of is the thick brush and abundance of slews and pond has to be slowing the dogs down i guess.is it just one of those things just keep running them in it and hope they pick up or get a hold of them texas boys and get some real brush dogs. i dont know just my thought any advice would help

I think no matter what kind of dogs you have, the hogs will still get away more often in thick brush than open areas. Most of the places I hunt are really brushy and I have pretty rough dogs and they still get away. The hogs build makes it really easy for them to bust through the brush and for the trail to close up right behind them making to dogs have to look for them again. I don't know how rough your dogs are, but but having a rough pack will help hold the hog longer because they have a tendency to force the hogs to stop and fight rather than run away. Also, if you don't already have a catch dog, you might want to consider one to turn loose close to stop them until you get there but you have to be careful not to turn him loose too far away because you will be taking a greater risk of getting the dogs injured. Other than that, what area of Cali do you hunt?

try a smaller dog that can go where they do easier & faster than the big dogs.

Down here in Texas we still run into dogs that are really good on farm land, but not to good in the thick brush. Some dogs it seems just aren't comfortable in the heavy stuff. Some will hunt everything but mature corn fields. Not sure what type of dogs your running, but the thicker the cover, the quieter your dogs need to be IMO. Also I agree with the above post, my hunting dogs are somewhat smaller than most around here and it allows them to be faster in the brush while tracking, and more agile when battling in tight confines. Even my cd's aren't over 60 lbs. Also my pack is extremely rough, if they bark it's a big hog. I could be wrong, but I think smaller size, a willingness to put teeth on one, and a strong desire to finish the job are what you need in thick brush. They still get away on occassion, but not as often as what alot of others are experiencing down here. Hopefully your dogs will develop a liking to the brush with some more exposure. Good luck.
