All things considered, I think most houndsmen would agree that Walkers generally make the best bear dogs.

I'm a walker man myself and I've seen some pretty good walker bear dogs in my day but all I know is the "real" bear hunters around here, the ones that want to keep pressure on the 400+ bears that stay on the ground use plotts. The run up some hefty vet bills but they keep on the bear.....
Once I get a little more money to pay for the kamikaze dogs I'll have a few in my pack;)
Also, little surprised redbones aren't on the list, I've seen 2 great bear redbones in my time....(my time has been short, so two is a good number, haha)
In the end though my votes for the crazy plotts!

Hounder-
What side of the state are you from? I'd bet good money that you are a more east sider than west by your comments. For whatever reason the east side has a lot more guys running plotts than over this way on the west.
Here it's more of a hodge podge of colors with white looking dogs probably having the upper hand. Notice I said white looking, not walkers.

But most guys hunt whatever color dogs are catching critters for them and then cross them up and keep the color they like the most.

I have never hunted with a majestic, but I have seen awesome bear dogs in every other breed. I have also seen dogs that need to eat a bullet in every breed as well. I think the best breed is the one that you want to hunt. Because the more you hunt the better your dogs are going to be, the rest is just color.

I like the Black & Tans but the best dog I ever had was a mixed up dog i got from Van Johnson. And I did say (dog) because Lord only know's what was in that thing. But he would put a bear on the limb.

He was out of a cur of Ernie Crammer's and a dog named Copper. I think Wade Lemmon had the Copper dog. And I think that dog was red and white in color. Plott if any it wasn't much.
