I like the way BlackandTanMan1 thinks!!

If everybody culled those lurpy black dogs for running deer there wouldn't be any left on the planet. Wouldn't the world be a better place? ;)

Just kiddin', couldn't resist that one. :D

From my experience a lot of guys are too light on the Tri-tronics button, worried they'll somehow damage the dog. Like I told my buddy, if you can shock the hunt or drive out of the dog just by pushing a button, you don't want that dog anyway.

I see a lot guys think this dog trashing. I don't think trashing is the problem he is learning to rig and once he rigs he gets let off the box.

Bency take him to downtown Albuquerque (or a place you know there is no bears or cats) put him up on the rig if he starts to babble give him a little juice. Dont over do it. Then take him hunting if he goes to babbling again take him off the rigg and put him in the box. Then repeat step one with a increase in the juice.

You are just worked up because those black dogs got the market cornered on deer. Those blues got the moose all locked up, and the reds the elk fear. Face it you can't have it all.

I can say I'm not overly joyed when a young dog runs "shit" as you put it. But I'd rather have them run shit a time or two, than not do shit all-together. I'm not going to crank it up to 6 and blast on a dog that is still figuring things out. If they hang around past their second hunting season, then they get NO slack. I'm talking about YOUNG dogs above.

I've seen some top shelf dogs absolutely pound a deer when they were young. If they would have been nixed after the second time, they never would have made it. These dogs did everything you'd want, once they were broke.

Black&TanMan1 wrote:Sounds to me that there are a lot of people who dont mind runnin shit. I personally will cull a dog that runs a deer more than twice after being corrected for it. And by culling I mean done, over, nomore dog. only thing worse than a shit runnin dog is a tree fighter. Do you let your young dogs gett away with that also? Would be a shame to ruin a good tree dog by wiping them at the tree for fighting! :? :?

Once a dog is out there hunting with my old dogs, I will burn them down for bumping junk. I am talkin about a young dog that jumps a deer and runs it like he wants to catch it. I like that in a dog. A couple of them just aint never seen to bother me much. Of course I have also had some great dogs that never even thought about running trash. I guess it just wasnt in them to do it.

I kill a dog that wants to fight at the tree at all. I do not put up with that shit.

I have to agree. Blood 'n Guts is on his way back from a bear hunting trip where last count he had treed 11 bears in 7 days of hunting.

He's got his six dogs and my six dogs in the truck and if we used the "they run deer twice they die" rule he would have ZERO dogs in the truck. :)

But as long as it's black dogs eating bullets I have no problem with that. ;)

We need more plott guys with that same mentality. ;)

Everybody has their own methods and if it's working for you, I say stick with it. Most guys I know around here just go run trash all day, gather the dogs up and tell everyone they were on a mean walking bear all day. :D :D

heres one for ya:
Lets say you have a "young Dog" say 16months old been to 15 bear trees. Trees, runs and trails fair to good.
You have this dog and 4 more out on a bear track. Their heating it up but not jumped it yet. You have the young dog wired up, do too something simple like not listening too you when shitting them out in the morning/collaring up.
The dogs are in site and they trail into a brush patch. Out runs a doe with "young dog" in hot pursuit. Other dogs are still trailing down the draw.
Whatcha going to doo?

If you shit him out and he runs a deer... I would say he is just trying to get that scent out of his nose and maybe if you ate a bunch of berry filled doughnuts the night before..... he thinks he is running a bear....lol! :D

Catch him. Give him a good whipping. Pack him back in immediately. But that is just what I would do. What would you do?

How you going to catch him? Me I would holler a few profanities at him and if he didnt stop immediately and turn around I would hit him with the shocker and shock his as? all the way back to me. Then I would put him back on the track with the other dogs. This dog should already know what the good game is so I would have no issues about lighting him up for runnin a deer. If it was his very first time out Imight have a little tolerance for it but very little.Besides if the dog is breed right the instinct to run good game over trash should already be in him.

So once you shock them twice they don't wear a shock collar any more?

The only thing I doubt about what you have said is that they only get two chances and then execution. I think you are exagerating the truth. If Black and Tans were that much better than the other breeds they would be more popular.

Ive never said Black&Tans were better, just the ones Ive owned have not been trashy. And yes if the dog runs shit after the second shock therapy its not eatin my gravy train. Im not talkin about bumpin trash im talkin runnin it. If a dog has that much desire to run trash im not going to have it in my box. And let me clarify when I say runnin trash after two shock therapy sessions I dont mean a deer ounce and an elk next I mean the same type of trash. Im not going to cull a dog for runnin deer twice and a coyote or elk the next time. But if they run deer after working them over twice there down the road.
Heres another one for ya! How many of ya tolerate a dog that craps on top of your box repeditly? Not doo to your fault by not cleaning them out,but do to them just being pigs.

crapping on the box would have to know how good the dog was, if it was a top notch dog I would tolerate it for a while but if it was not a top notch dog not for long, I would rub their face in it and go from there.

All hound pups trash, and a dog that has been cahined up for a month will trash, you have t keep them in tune, an older dog won't do it much but they will when the rest of the pack does. B&T man you got lucky with your b&t dogs, mine ran trash better than all my others, and they suck on bear, maybe the terrain, build? All hound breeds have there pro's and con's, but cross them up and get the best of both world's.l

Post by Dan Edwards »

I damn sure aint gonna put him back in any kind of race. I am gonna put him in the box and he gets to stay there the rest of the day and when we get home he gets tied back up and gets to think about that shocking he got some more.
