The best kind is what ever you can afford

You can spend a pile of money on sleds. I have hunted off Ski Doo's, Yamaha's, and Polaris'. Like Kevin stated...high country breaking drifts is no place for a Scandik, BUT you could break trail with your 800 cuttin for tracks....go back unload your scandik and hook onto the dogs

No really though I hunt off a Yamaha V-Max right now as I got a good deal on it....had two Yamaha Phazers before that. Lion huntin is hard on machines if your like me....may be up in the deep one day or riding in the mud the next. You learn where the snowmobile you own will and won't take you

i was really interested in the tracked rhinos too. But b4 i went shopping i asked the forest service were they legal to ride just like regular snow machines. They are not, where i live! Even though they both operated on tracks once the gates closed due to snow only snow machines allowed.

I just got my 2010 ski-doo tundra a couple of weeks ago. I have only taken it out for one short run and it was awesome. I haven't truly put it to the test yet but I am expecting that it will do just fine. Catdogs is right though, all of the new tundras have the 550 fan. They are built more like a mountain sled with the rev-xu platform and still have the utility sled capabilites. They should do well in the backcountry and should do great hauling hounds.

I guess we can get this old thread going again since a lot has changed since 2009. I have been cat hunting from my truck and my buddies tracked sxs. This coming season I am finally in the market for a snow machine. Trying to figure what is best for me. Not sure a tracked sxs would fit in my garage so I’m leaning more towards a tracked quad. Looking at both the Suzuki king quad 750 as well as the can am outlander 1000xt max.
I don’t really want a snowmobile because I’d like to use the machine all year for bear season as well as deer and elk hunting.
Love to hear what others think of using a tracked quad. I know I’ll be in the cold elements vs being in a warm cab

Hands down a Ski-Doo Expedition 550F is the best cat hunting sled ever built- side by sides and 4 wheelers on tracks are slow and suck gas and you stay way warmer on a snowmobile

JDV. I appreciate the feed back and had a few talks with friends this weekend and got the same advice for a snowmobile. How does the expedition 55f compare to the tundra 600 ace?

You stay way way warmer on the 550 than you do the 600 ace- but the ace gets way better fuel mileage. I’ve rode the two and I prefer the 550
