Mr. Clyde,

What you are dealing with sounds suspiciously like what Dad has had with two different Hounds that were out at Hooties.

Symptons sound the same. One Hound got sick after Dad came back to AR. I took him to the Vet and was able to save him (after $900.00 bill).

We had another bitch get sick last year who had been raised out at Hooties but had not been there for several years. Vet was not sure he could save her, as he could not figure out what it was she had, just a respiratory infection. Very similar symptoms to what the earlier male had showed.

The Vet. then ran an extended heart worm test....what he was looking for was signs of the Errlyciousus (sp) bacteria. The test was positive and he started intensive IV treatments and was able to save the bitch….however she has breathing problems and can not make repeated races anymore.

The Vet says that testing for this problem has become easier in the last year or so. He went back and looked at the records from the earlier male and said that he now thinks that this was what he had as he responded to the same treatment protocol and h is symptoms were the same.

There is some good info on the Internet about this problem and Google will correct the spelling for you.

Hope this helps!

C. John,

Thanks for heads up. Both dogs, Zip who died & Jazz that was so sick, were never at Hooties. Took me some time to re think what I took and hunted with there, but I seem to be getting miles and age creeping up on me :D

And, tests were made of Jazz to rule out heart worms and bacterial virus connected with those type.

I will attempt to get name or names from pathologist at lab and post that on here for everyone.

Come and go hunt with us sometime or we will meet up in SE OK?

I think Marion is down at Hooties and they are hunting now?

Talked to my vet today about viruses, and he said, to watch out for fecal matter of any animal, especially coyotes. They have a very strong parasite and if ingested they will make the hound ill or latter die. When the hounds are running out of view, who knows what they can sniff and lick. :(
