If we are stopping it and getting in to it and can kill the bear or catch dogs then we count it. So I'm agreeing with some you but completely with Hi-tech. We can find an untreeable bear about anywhere we can go here at about any time. And everybody here has the same scenario. More bite will just help stop or slow them up is all.

any body that thinks all bears will climb ,hasnt hunted long enough .ive killed numeros bears that couldnt climb ,one was missing a front leg at the ankle due to a trap .another was missing a hind leg , another had his front foot broken by a con trap .i dont care what you put on them they cant climb . as far as i'm concerned if i can get in close and dump him he;s caught . you guys that think your dogs will make them all tree call me i'll leave my culls home ,and well watch yours die .www.fallriverwalker.com

I gotta agree the "all bears tree" has been beaten to death. Either you have easy bears, don't hunt much, or have the worlds best dogs...

I'll feed my culls, and as long as I go pull my dogs off a bear and can look him in the eye, or up his backside, in the tree or on the ground, thats caught to me!! I prefer em in a tree though...

I also consider a sow and cubs just that. I don't say I treed one bear, or I treed 3 bear, I say I treed a sow and cubs... As far as counting goes, I'd just say I treed XX amount of bears and XX amount of sows with cubs. Which has been one time in 2 years.

I agree with Mike, I needs the stats.

It only matters if you in a contest. The number game is all about our ego's. A wise old houndman told me if you have good dogs let other's spread the word.

I think if you are content catching on the ground then thats great. I always look to tree a higher percentage each year, that measures the the packs improvements. If the percentage starts dropping its time to change dogs. I would say I probably catch as many as the next guy but I don't dump fresh dogs in on a tired bear. That not what I call a catch, no dropping fresh dogs in to close the deal. But maybe I have easy bears, them ones south of the 49th are that much tougher.

I think it takes alot more dog to stop them on the ground then put them in a tree. I guess I could use the old standby and say the bear out ran my dogs I grade my pack by the ratio of times turned loose and the bear I see treed or on the ground. Here's a pic of one that can't be counted since it was taken on the ground.












Pretty thick stuff just because there isn't a tree in sight doesn't mean the dogs didn't do the job.

10/4 on that Kurt, good post. The brush bears are a measuring stick in my book. Anybody that has walked a wide enough circle knows that not every bear trees.......... no matter how many dogs are dumped.

A bear that is treed or stopped on the ground long enough for the hunter to put an end to it if they so choose. Thats what I call a caught bear, for what ever thats worth

If the dogs catch it weather in a tree or on the ground and you get to them it's a caught bear, IMO Mike

COMMON , HAVENT ANY OF YOU HEARD OF, OR USED THE TREE SAAP ON THEIR FEET ,AND CHECKED THEIR TEETH FOR BEAR HAIR METHODS. THESE ARE SURE SIGNS OF CAUGHT BEAR !!

Caught is caught to me, meaning they are not going anywhere cuz the dogs wont let them or at least have the bear concerened enuf that they would rather stop,climb, whole up whatever,
walking bear is not a caught bear IMO.

Every once in a while those three pawed bear can be made to climb, But I here what you are saying, not often, this one was put up with my buddy's two Dollin's Plotts.

Like most people the treed bear is caught. The bear you could harvest is caught as well. The sow and cubs treed seperate are seperate 2 trees. The hounds tracks and locates the tree the same as any tree. How many tracks do the dogs cross when running a bear? Who says the bear you tree is the one you started?
I don't like making excusses for hounds but I am not going to take away from their good work.
