If you got bear then you probably got some ground he!! wouldn't have and usually thats all it takes to limit the pressure on their butts and stay out of the trees. Other than places like where I live here in the mountains of North Carolina where bear been run since they fell out of their moma's a$$es for generations and the ones that have climbed died, then I agree with Smiley the bad coastal areas are rough. We got that too though but on the other end from me. Heard the Forks Washington before as well. Got family on both sides I barely know in the Forks. They compare it to here though. Some the oldest bear hunting with hounds traditions are traced back to here and documented. Daniel Boone is one to mention as well as the Plott family. The plott hound was developed for their hunting needs here in the mountains of western NC many years ago. My opinion we get a spot on the list because its partly the bears, partly the ground, partly the hunters and partly the history of all those combined. Year round training on private land, 2 1/2 monthes on public land training and 2 1/2 monthes of open kill season, educates them pretty dang well.

ha you guys think you got it rough? northern wisconsin has all that plus on any given day all your dogs could get their guts ripped out and eaten by wolves. if you don't have to worry about that every day, then i hope you realize how good you actually have it.

I'm not the master houndsman when it comes to bears, but if it gets any harder than southern utah I don't want any part of it.

The older I get the more I will stick with Maine .Hills OK ,the Mountains let the young bucks chase them as the crow flies ,I do not want to be more than 2 miles from an accessable skidder road. unless absolutely necessary .It all really depends on the Topography you want to chase them in .

I have to laugh on some of these comments. Idaho has been dogged to death? Where? 50% of Idaho has never seen a dog! Maybe get out of town and you will see less hunters. If you hunt the bear park you might run into 20 hound hunters. There is a reason, it is easy and a lot of roads. For the rest of the states that have almost impossible bear to catch. Maybe it is not the bear? I'll bet every place that some say it is difficult others say it is easy. Find the guys that are catching bear and get what they are hunting.

our bears are easy to run, they just dont tree cause they're to damn big for our little trees. 4 out of 5-6 bears will be on the ground when they get him stopped. the terain aint all that great for the hunter to get there but the dogs dont have much trouble, its either swamp or wall to wall briars and bay trees, a lot of hands and knees crawling.

square mile for mile UTAH is the tuffest bear hunting you will find in the U.S unless you are hunting some where that has no bears. absolutely no running of baits here either rig and run or find a track.

I would say the hardest places to catch bears are the places that are the hardest to get to the dogs, whatever state it might be in.

well one thing that is a fact from the guys that i know that run bear newyork is easy very easy i know a guy who trees bear every mornin before work there is no kill season with dogs in ny the same dogs hunt maine west side i have seen them go a week with out stopin one some of these dogs hunt down in west virginia when season closes they can rig etc they are some of the best the brush slows them down and they cant run as fast in maine but some days they tree one fast up there and some times they get it right every day but you are not runnin to work afterwards
newjersey and pa, a house cat probably treem no kill season period in nj past ten years i think in pa lots of them den under neth house decks they live a stress free life some people have had 3 or 4 bears hang out in there yards they stop traffic
but also i think the east side of maine is thicker brusher and so much it slows the bear also but would be good to find out from some one who has hunted both sides of maine
we have run into a hunter in maine that has been runnin dogs for two years and did not tree a bear yet some guides also dont tree one durin the trainin season
guess theonly thing that matters is if you can tree them on the regular and know what you need if you cant

gotta agree there. if it gets any tuffer than utah to chase bears i'm not interested. especially southern utah, where there's lots of country and only a few bears. you hear about guys catching 2 or 3 bears a day consistantly in other states, but not down here. we do have a few bear units here that are not included in this though. boulder mt., lasals, san juan etc alot of guys hunt them with great success consistantly. I just got back from the lasals, it's a whole different world from here to there.
not takin away from the wolf problems up in idaho, but that is kindofa different obsticle. at least you can bait and you have dense bear populations. just my opinion.

I have only hunted in WI and MI, but some of the tougher spots to hunt are plenty tough for this guy. I don't want any part of something tougher. There is nothing worse than to bushwack into a tree a few miles back in (which takes hours) to have the bear bail and take off in deeper to battle more bugs, water and heat as the temps rise. I gag a little bit just thinking about it. My buddy Pete said it best about these places "The only good reason to go IN is if you're going to be dragging something OUT".
