Mixing packs - the good, the bad and the ugly?

some times when we put another fellas dog in the box with ours they might get a little growly. as soon as one growls i light his a$$ up. that puts an end to right then and there. you have to have 0 tolerance for fighting and air barking.

And so do I, every time and no mercy if trouble starts in my pack. But the problems I hear about you might not be there, may have all your dogs on a tree and ten or twenty strange dogs are dumped in on your run or tree, and some those dogs dogs dumped are alligators. That's when dogs get stretched under the tree I'm told. Like I said, never seen it happen but hear about it all the time in places like the Book Cliffs and the San Juan, and I stay the hell out of those places.........

In some of those areas a guy might be hours driving close enough to walk into the tree, and trouble could have hours to brew.......

yeah, thats a lot different than where we are at. we all turn our dogs out in the same block of woods, but every body knows every body and most of our dogs are use to running together. that dont sound like to much fun , having somebody you dont know dump their dogs in on top of you. sht would hit the fan if that happened around here.

You can get away with mixing packs as long as both hunters have the same no tolerance of BS from dogs. I use to mix packs all the time with 4 different packs. None of us would tolerate in hair bristling and if a dog did they got taught otherwise real quick. We never had one tree fight or growly issue.

The issues we would see was the dogs wouldnt honor dogs in other packs as well. It would hamper our progress when cold trailing lions. If we had a loose one dog would find it but other wouldnt go to them to check. Slowed us down some but really wasnt much of a problem

It must be a little different with running hounds that treeing hounds. It’s very common for us to mix packs when running yotes. There are dozens of guys with dogs and you never know who’s going to show up at a track. We try to let each guy get a dog(s) in at some point. So we pretty much run mixed every time we are out.

I've never had any trouble. Hounds are pack dogs. Yes, you may have a few moments here and there but we're not talking pitbulls. For the most part hounds wanna hunt and they have been breed to hunt in packs with other hounds.

If ya have a hound that wants to get a lil on`ry around other hounds kick him in his ass a few times when his pulls that sh%$ or give him a quick jolt for a e-collar and that should correct the problem after a few times of pulling it.

There is such a thing as mirco managing dogs folks...let them be hounds. We are not recreating the wheel. Hounds have been hunted in packs long before we picked up the game.

Never had a problem with it either.... I've mixed packs my whole life. Then again we don't keep mean, fighting culls around either. Some may not have known their butt from their face but they don't fight! LOL Kidding
