Some individuals are suprisingly cold nosed and in the last while through selective breeding I am getting a higher percentage with that quality plus the speed.
These hounds are normally cast free with the colder nosed hounds right from the beginning and work the trail according to what their nose is telling them. Sometimes one of them will actually get a trail started amongst the colder nosed hounds and then they join in.
Working closely with them we have identified the individuals with colder noses and those are the ones I've been breeding. On leopard hunts where we release hounds on finding tracks or off of kills I have often used my pressure dogs to start the track, that way I get an idication of how close the cat may be.
This becomes necessary when you're loaded with back to back hunts with clients and you need to conserve your pack by not wearing them out on to many long trails = management.
Hope it makes a bit of sense.
