I think everyone that has posted has said alot of truth but I have to say when Cobalt said (giving a cat no time is critical to success) is sooooooooooo true, well said.

That, in heavy doses, is the majic formula right there. Throw in superior intelligence and that kind of dog will be a superstar in the hands of the right trainer. But you will hunt high and low, because that kind is more scarce than hens' teeth. Slower dogs do catch cats for sure, but the fast ones with everything else, will catch many, many more.

first i would like to say i golfed 27 holes yesterday so i was pretty drunk last night but i was up and had the dogs out by 4 this morning. i personaly like fast dogs and here is why. i like hearing a dog that is trying to catch and kill a cat. you can hear it in there voice, when they cross the road you can see there determination. throwing gravel 30 feet behind them. flying off the bank to the road hitting chest first gathering thereself back up and running. right dewey. i like hearing a 2 min lose with no barking then have a dog pick it up 200yrd from where they last had it. then the whole pack flys to that dog silent until they get caught back up. im in this sport for one reason i love to here good dogs give everything they have, if the cat gets away after a hard chase and i lose him in the road that is ok because i know the dogs gave it 100 percent and so did the cat. i will run him tomorrow. i dont want a slow or medium speed dog because they seem to not make as many loses and that is less exciting of a race to me. its like if i put old blue down on a lion track in the snow. old blue opens every 5 seconds trails on out makes one jump and trees the lion . good for old blue that is the style of hunting he was bred for. i like having 20 or 30 jumps in a race. i dont care about killing the cat i just want to hear the race and the locate and tree. that enough for now

ok im back, speed is important but not as important as steady preasure. if a dog can keep a track moving at a pace that the cat dosnt have time to catch its breath then the dog will catch the cat on the ground or up a tree. like it has been said before a mixure of fast and steady dogs is hard to beet. are you going to breed aka dd to butch Andy.

Man, it is fun to come on here and read you guys when I can. Dont know when or if I will hunt again, but I can get a little adrenalin shot just from reading some of this stuff.
It is so interesting to read each post and then try and figure out each mans reason for having dogs. Sometimes you can tell, sometimes you cant, and sometimes you think you can, but really you cant. Ha ha.

In the same way, it is fun to try to figure out a dogs reason for hunting cat as well. I just love JC's description of the kamakazie self destructive fighter pilots. Not too much question why those dogs are hunting. I like that kind of dog and that kind of person as well. Not always the most reliable in either case, but they sure make me smile a lot in both cases. That is the kind of kids I want on my football team. We sure will make some dumb mistakes, but we sure will be feared by all

I will tell you my favorite kind of dog whether slow or fast: It is the dog that, on a regular basis, makes me scratch my head and ask "how in the world did she do that?". And years later, still scratching my head asking the same question. To me, this is the most entertaining. And face it, unless you are making a living at catching bobcats, entertainment must be one of the reasons you do it.

I have never had the steady, never make a lose, track dog fit the above description. But, if I were to set out building a two dog bobcat pack again, the first one I would find would be a stedy, never make a loose track dog. Then I would go looking for the entertainer.

I really enjoyed this post. Now you guys got me wondering why do I do it. I think it is my natural instinct to hunt for the challange of the chase and catch that tricky cat. And I like that our hounds come from generations of work breeding training and developing technology. We all add to the future of hounding. Thank you for all your good posts. I keep hearing about these fast smart and accurate cat dogs. I've never had a superstar like that. Who has one here in Oregon? I'd just like to see the dog work. And maybe learn from his master.

JC, I was sure considering it but she has never came in yet and now with season just around the corner it will have to wait until next spring. If any of them have any brains and ability to trail and tree I think the SPEEEEEED will be there.
