grey vs red fox

I raised a litter of reds one time. They can make a variety of very strange noises. Some of the noises they made I never would have guessed was a fox if I heard it in the woods. Screams, clicks, squalls and then typical canine type noises.

Yea they do have heard and seen them a few times seems they use some strange sounds while hunting.

I cant say how a grey would run but I've had my share of red fox races. And it usualys ends up either in a cranky old mans barn or more often than not under ground. Now Ive had races where the fox would run a beeline to the next county and not look back. Also had em run 200 yards and ducked down the first hole they could find. And when Im really lucky i'll get em to circle. And its fun to try and guess where the suckers gunna come out next to thow some led at em. I have found most reds to be pretty chicken and not put up a fight, granted theres always some exceptions. They are really pretty crafty after theyve been chased before, and you'd be suprised how well they can climb, I aint talking trees, but rocks, fences ect.

so has anybody ever treed a red? out of running several i never have never treed one and only caught a few out a many

Interesting to read about your experances on red fox ive hunted them a lot over the years with both english foxhounds and staghounds. Only had one hound that could catch a fox and he killed plenty till he was stollen. They are slippery things though had em go to ground, up drain pipes even up trees and sit there watching us. Its pretty common to put the terrier up a hollow tree trunk and have a fox jump out the top 30 or so feet up in the air.
I hunt with stags now on open country sounds simular to where you hunt bad moon makes for short runs but we get quite a few, a few are still good enough to get away though.

so are you saying you have actually seen one tree?

yes they tree they do it some times to escape my staghounds. we get a lot of trees out here that have hollow trunks right through the foxes will even bred in these. when we are hunting them its always worth looking up in the branches of a oak or fig tree.as they are often just sitting up there watching us go by.

I m not sure but I think we only have greys in my neck of the woods. Well, that is all I have ever seen. Maybe someone else can confirm differently. I like running my young dog's on them.

BBGH Im not sure exactly where you live but there is red fox in ca i have seen several of them in the central valley.. There is no season meaning we cant hunt them at all. Hope that helps good luck.

Thank you for the info dc. I am not a varmit hunter I just let my young dogs run them around the ranch. I figure if they can track and tree a fox they can track a bear. All I have seen is the greys on the ranch but that does not mean there are no reds. Like I said thanks for the.info. have a good one, best cody brawley

New on hear. I have a dog that is trained for bobcat. I am wondering what the best way to go about getting her on grey fox would be
