I'm not sure the bayonet will have the same effect as the spear. Animal may still be able to reach you. Probably better than no bayonet though. The spear not only can kill but more importantly can keep an animal off you. Prongs are helpful so an animal cannot run up the spear and get you. There is a size limit to stopping a charge with a spear. Like a large bear or cape buffalo is too big, but a spear is the right tool for close starting charges from medium sized attackers like lepard, cougar and deer. It also works to repel animals leaping down on you so long as you have it pointed correctly.

I doubt that an African cat cares a whit about hounds as they don't have the same instincts that the NA puma does towards the wolf family (dogs).
But I sure view a bayonet more favorably now.

Here is what the cat looked like after it was mounted. Yeah, it had some bullet damage.
