I bought a 10,000 pound after reading this. I love it. It's paid for itself. If it broke now I'd go buy another. Very handy. It is slow but it's faster than any alternative I can think of. The only time that sucks is when your done pulling and are just winding it up. Easy to use and install, also.
Don't buy the hype.

Who cares? If it can be made for 1/3 of the price else where and that's what I can afford, so be it. Maybe if the feds weren't so unfriendly to business we'd be able to afford american. I mean after all, my toyota was made in kentucky and my chevy in mexico. Makes sense, doesn't it?

pegleg : Good point about the batteries .a few years ago my buddy got one at Harbor Freight . I think it may have been the 8,000 lb rated one .Anyhow his kid's snowmobile broke down . He and I went to retrieve it ,Got stuck , NO PROBLEM .Winched it out ,Got back into the truck ,Went to fire it back up CLICK CLICK CLICK . Always leave the power supply running while winching

My experience with harbor freight is you get what you pay for. Some of its crap, but not everything. A couple hundred bucks for a winch i wouldnt have a problem with that if it gets me out a few times.

Is there any winches still even made here? I try to buy american made anytime I can but the truth is you can't buy only american made any longer. Every time I turn on the TV or even this Computer I read about another american company folding or selling out to foreign companies.

Re: harbor freight winches?
My girlfriend ended up getting me a tough stuff 12500 from eBay. I parralled a battery and put it in the bed of my truck. It got me out of a couple of jams this winter and my little s10 had to winch a full size out of the drifts. It's not very fast but so far it paid for itself a couple times. It came with a three year warranty too. I give it a good review so far. I got a hitch mount and cut up and re- welded a front reciever mount so that it didn't kill my ground clearance. I made an extension cord out of welding cable so I can winch myself out backwards if I need to. The winch rides behind the seat so it's out of the weather. I got stuck more this year because I had no fear with the winch in the back. What's a few more dents anyway? I ran without chains more too. I really like having a winch.
