most ive cut is 9 , usally run the first though deffanitly the way its going to be this year all trainners

In my area over the past 5 years or so I would say you would average about 1 track for every 5 days of hard driving, so that figures out to about 1 track per thousand miles. If you run 5 pickups and radios you might be able to find a track a day but that still averages one track per thousand miles, so lions is mighty scarce. 15 years ago I would say you would usualyl cut a couple of track a day if the snow had been on the ground a day or two but that has all changed, so like Big Mike I just load my horse and dogs and go hunt the dirt some place else when it snows here or you may find me way up high on snowshoes with a couple of pups looking for bobbers.

Was just having a conversation about how the first few snows bring down the game but the lions lag or take longer to show. I don't know why but it sure seems that way. Was thinking maybe they are eating the straglers up high that are slow moving in heavy snow.

I have never found a track in snow yet, but then we don't get all that much snow. Every time it snows here I walk all over the mtn and just get wet and cold... Last year I did get to see some cat tracks in the snow but my dogs were already trailing it and the snow was 1/2 inch and melted before they caught it. I think here they just hunker down and wait til the snow melts, never lasts for more than a few days and is usualy gone the next day.

Iv seen up to 8 in one day.

Wow, I sure am envious of all you guys having so much luck cutting fresh tracks every day. We just don't have that many lions up here in this north country. Typically in the early season when we can run a lot of country out we can cut a track a day, but I'd be hard pressed to say a freshy a day. Once the winter range closures take effect and the snow piles up azz deep to a tall indian, they get hard to dig out!

I guess I should have been more specific, We can cut a track to run most every time we go out, not always a "fresh" one though. They generally fresh enough to make the dogs bark, but not always catch.

Mike, how often do you find something to run by freecasting off mules?

i freecast my dogs quite often and i usually trail everytime mostly just cold trailing but i dont mind i just like hearin em bark and watchin my dogs work we have caught a few that way though. we catch more runnin the roads and tryin to cut the track somewhere else to freshen it up though
