Well my theory is "Shoot a boar hunt some more", In AZ once our female harvest is met we don't get to hunt no more. Of course when you got a bear up in the tree you can most the time get a look at the gender. If you don't got dogs and are taking 100 yard shots plus, well, no way to tell. I don't know what our statistics are this year on female harvest, I do know that our area is still open amazingly enough!! Alot of hunters out there, and they all ain't hound hunters. Of course the one fellar above is right, without the boars how the females gonna breed!!!

boars are a must however i would believe one boar will produce a heck of alot more cubs in his life than the best sow ever could.

Well a different perspective, one bull services how many cows, 20 to 30 i would guess, thats domestic cows probably close to the same for elk?So the sows have two cubs, he bred 20, which equated to 40 cubs, sows seem more valuable to me :?: :?:

Bplott wrote:The thing is there was around 158 bears sport harvest and 53 was sows.

I would assume that this number (53) does not include bears that are wacked by the DWR and Gov hunters... I would bet the numbers are even higher than you are thinking.

I said sport harvest....yes the other mortality changes the numbers; but the DWR makes there decisions on sport harvest only not on all bears killed in the state......What I am saying is it is just flat rediculas. That our sportsmen had a 34% female harvest....ADC and DWR are killing every bear that is deamed to be a problem . No matter sex or age.....As ethical houndsmen the females should be let go......If it squats to pee let it be!!!!! :beer

I've got a study done in MN, which is a no hound state, on a sow, refered to bear #56. She didnt have her first cubs until the age of five, she produced 26 cubs, which was her last ones that survived, she was at the age of 25 years old. 18 of the offspring were females. Which produced 47 grand daughters and 30 great grand daughters, remember, this is living, which was not killed by hunters and produced, Bear number 56 did not hit her peak weight until she was 25 years old. She is now 36 years of age, NY has record of them living to be 40 years old. Quite a interesting article, food for thought

yard dog. i believe you are on to something with the goverment hunters. anybody know how to find out how many they took out of the state. i heardd some numbers in my area and it sounded kind if scary? i would almost bet they are as much of a problem or more than unethical hunters. i could be wrong but the bits and pieces i have heard on areas they trapped numbers seem to be high. one area in paticular i know of a couple years ago they had a bear comind in to some cabins by the time they left they had almost every bear in the area trapped. cant remember the exact number but seems like at least five. this area used to be a friend of mines favorite area but is yet to bounce back with bears. i have heard stories of other areas where one bear starts a problem and several gets taken out. seems like it is to bad that the state does not control what thier hunters are taking out of an area. it is not fair to tax paying hunters if the goverment is killing our bears before hunters get the chance.

Bad moon, this info is on the DWR website. Go to hunting, blackbear, and the annual reports all have links on that page. Bplott, there are in all reality a few (very few) bears that are struck by cars, the thing that erks me is that an additional 30-35% are depredated every year. We are waiting 10-15 years to draw a tag and an additional 40- 50 bears are being waked by the state every year. Just seems wrong.. Agree with you on the killing of sows. As far as the upcomming RAC meetings, will show up, however IMO the RAC is a joke. The DWR is going to do what it wants. The RAC is nothing more than an insulater, a pissing post if you may. They are "yes men" and have no influence in regards to managment decisions. I remember when we lost our fall persuit in the Bookcliffs. It was standing room only, all in support of the fall persuit. We lost out to 3 undocumented complaints made by telephone. Thats right 3..... Just wish they would leave things the hell alone......
