I like to run the dogs with bells on sometimes. If you've ever seen a coyote carcass after its been hit by lions it ain't pretty. I never seen coyotes run any lions off before.

State biologists have found evidence of over 40 kinds of prey that are taken by lions in California including coyotes, domestic cats and dogs, porcupines, skunks, ringtail cats, you name it and a cougar will kill and eat it. Next on their menu, human children. It ain't if, it is chillingly when.

Had a good friend tree a Tom couple weeks ago now, that had a wolf killed and buried on top of the elk kill it had made. They made it to the tree, and noticed birds not far so they walked over to find the wolf stacked on top the elk and buried. They guessed from the tracks the lone wolf tried to take the kill and the lion came up on it from behind. The lion had licked all the fur off one side and just started to eat the insides of the wolf. They weighed the wolf on a scale at the tree and it went 96lbs missing an entire side of hair and insides. I have seen the pictures as they took many, but am not authorized to post them. If i get permission i will post them. But it was nice to see a cat helping us out with the wolf situation.

[quote="chilcotin hillbilly"]This is a common occurance in my neck of the woods. Here is a picture of a yote that a female killed, She treed about 200yards from the kill.
Chilcotin, Do you think the lion that killed your dog a few weeks ago had experience killing coyotes and thats why she was up to turn on the hounds? Or was she just a mean bi#$@.

this may be a bit off topic but I've noticed lions and bears often act different towards different hounds. lions kill a good amount of pet dogs in any area I've been that has lion habitat next to residential areas. yet those same lions back up and spit from a loud mouthed hound.
now onto my observation I picked up to foxhound cross female pups once and they were young when i started them and had odd voices, almost a pain induced yipping. one morning i was running them alone with a older hound on bobcat and they were really sounding off in a wash when two coyotes came blazing in there set to eat them alive or so it appeared. the older hound "bawl mouthed" bayed twice farther up the wash probably well over a hundred yards from the coyotes. both coyotes slid to a stop right at the edge of the wash and started loping off at a angle from the older hound. I managed to shoot one that turned out to be a female. anyway after this I often noticed that these two didn't get the automatic respect of some game the way the other hounds did. They had plenty of grit. would pull hair and were large hounds over sixty five lbs both. I've seen the same when a cow dog is on a bay up. its often this dog that the lion swats at and stares at the most. so those big voices surely play a part in the intimidation game.

Pegleg, you might be off topic but that observation is interesting as heck. I have 4 hounds 2 bawl mouths, 1 high pitched yodeler & barker,1 that sounds she is wounded when she bawls, Ive actually had grown men jump out of their skin and say what the heck was that?? when that one sings, I just smile and say no worries thats cricket doing her thing,
Now I cant say that I have caught a lion yet, so I cant back you up on the swatting thing, but I have wondered for quite awhile what the heck it is about those two that brings the yotes a running in, now you provided me with a solid clue, thanks! maybe I best start running a bawler with a squeaker instead of two squeakers at once, I have been running all four at once so haven't had a problem yet, But a while back I got into a pickle and had to pack hounds out alone I decided when they heal up I'm only taking 2 at a time, Now I know the mix I will I will use...Ken

I think the wolves play a part in the cougars attitude. Wolves chase lions off their kills often, when a hound get separated and is one on one, a lion will try and finish the job. In this case the lion was skinny aand not doing well as it was only 2 and the first winter away from mom.

Oh yes, I tend to forget about the wolves as im lucky enough to hunt where there are no wolves.
