JMO, but there is no excuse for leaving dogs out overnight in wolf country. I have left dogs out over night when I have lost them, but that was back before Garmins. I don't go home without my dogs...For those steep icy slopes, I use these. About a 100 bucks and weigh next to nothing.

Well, I agree. If there was any way I could have, I would have went to them. I'm sure there is a lot of excuses, but you'll find none from me. It's just the way that it went.

The next morning we walked into them. I use a Garmin. I kept track of the elevation changes that day. We did nearly 8000 vertical feet of elevation change. That's two trips up 2000' and two trips back down. I won't be told that I didn't try.

You will find no one that respects their dogs mor than I do. Sometimes Mother Nature holds the cards. I've went to the effort to teach my dogs to be called off the tree by voice only, no leashes. It only works if they can hear me and if I can get their attention.

Steep icey slopes is not an accurate description of what they were on.

I will take your advice and get a pair of crampons.

Between young sone being hurt and dogs staying out in the woods over night. I think you did the right thing. g your boy home and come back in the morning. you do not want it to turn into something that will keep your boy from returning to hunt another day. the dogs will go everytime.hell you probably dont even need to ask them.

human safety before animal is just about the only reasonable way to deal with situations like that. once we put animal welfare before loved ones we cross that divide between us and the totalitarian anti's and their emotional babble. now on the other hand if it's between a good horse or hound and a sorry S.O.B then that's different! hell, may even be different if its a sorry horse. at least it's worth a little and most didn't chose to be that way, unlike their human counterparts.
I feel far more responsibility towards my children and families safety then any animal period. it doesn't take away from what I'm willing to do for my animals welfare and safety so long as they don't make the mistake of competing with my families safety at the same time.
