Just a heads up on this topic. If you are using the Forest Service roads you may run into some issues with the local law Enforcement officer. Some lion hunters up in the Campwood area of AZ found out the hard way about dragging roads and the restrictions that the Forest service has on it.

yea the Forest Circus would rather the roads got washboarded bad enough,they can claim not enough money to maintain them and put up another gate.In the name of safety of course.

Bency, we have tryed everything you can think of to drag and the best drag is a couple rolls of chain link rolled up. Even as it gets messed up it works good. I am afraid your drag will not work good at all unless the dirt is really soft. Some places we hunt the dirt gets a little hard so you need to break it up and a nice roll of chain link works great. We were dragging roads yesterday and some guys on quads asked what we were doing and we told him lion hunting. he asks, does the noise of that dragging attract them? lol Never had a problem with the law and dragging roads but im sure they could give you a hard time if they wanted to.

Just imagine a 5 ft by 5 ft pile of twisted up mangled chain link. lol Normaly we just hide our drags in the areas we hunt so we dont have to haul them around. The place we are in now, the dirt is pretty soft so it doesnt take much but some places seems like you need a real heavy drag like a roll of 4 or 6 ft chain link about 16 inches in across. Once you start to add more rolls you can tie heavy stuff on top to add weight.

If you have a 6 or 8ft treated post (a railroad tie works the best) wrap the chailink around the post. It's plenty heavy to break the ground a little and it seems to preserve the chain link a bit. There's lots of ways of doing it, this is just what we've done.
