I don't know about that, Ol Bohdi was pretty full of himself :)

I heard you used to hunt with him some time back. I have heard that bohdi was a pretty nice dog but a bit on the trashy side and mostly because he was never really diciplined for it. You are prolly one of the people that know these dogs better then most. I would like your insight on what they were like, good and bad. Dont pm me, put it on here for everyone to see so they can make their own call if they want a pup or not after what you have to say. I never hunted the dogs that mine are out of and have only heard about them. All i can say about these two is that they have done an awesome job hands down. Not tryin to call you out and you dont have to answer, I just thought it would be cool to see what someone who has hunted with some of these dogs in the pedigree first hand had to say. Thanks

Jc, thank you. I have never had a issue with these dogs being growly. I have hunted them with several other dogs that they didnt know and had no issue. I make sure my dogs can eat out of the same bowl together and when i feed i feed them all together. They have growled at strange people walking up to the dog box though and that is it and after they get to know the person then its just fine. Some of the pups out of hucks litter are big but, he is small and gritty is small as well. If i had to guess i would say that they both are around 23-25 inches at the shoulder, maybe a bit smaller. They are not big dogs by any means. Thank you for your insight on them.

I've known Melanie Hampton and Nick for many years and they are honest about their dogs and they have had enough success catching game to dispell any question as to their capabilities and I have no business interjecting opinions about dogs I haven't seen in the field for years. I did hunt around a few of the dogs in this family like Deacon and Stormy(Bohdi's sis) and Turk and Spook and Snoop and hunted a few times with close relatives of Bray's Lucille and I think Brisco's mother, Lucy was a dog I was around on and off for awhile. I even saw a little of the Zabriski dogs at a couple field trials. There's several people that have hunted around these dogs and know them as well and have their own opinions about them. It is an emotional topic for some and I wish to stay clear because while most were involved with the famous period of these dogs, I was around during the humbler times and the building of a dog rather than the finished product and that puts me in a volitile spot because I know too much. I picked up Bohdi with Terry at Dennis Bray's home when he was six weeks old and housed the dog throughout his youth and saw the dog pretty much daily til he was over 3 yrs and sporatically thru his life thereafter until his death and because of this have a pretty good account of the dog which I prefer to keep mainly to myself becuase it would take too long to explain the exactness of my recollection and for reasons stated earlier. CRC gave a fairly accurate description in a nut shell of the dog except he (Bohdi) was by no means a cold nose dog, although others in the line may have been. Neither was his dad, Deacon, who I hunted around extensively and was a great bear dog.
I hope you have luck with your litter. You obviously know what your doing. PM me if you wish and I would be happy to tell you a bit more of what I know.

Terry is where I got my dogs from, as pups.. Brisco included.. I had 3 off of his Bohdi dog.. Tex, Brisco and Mabel.. Tex was killed in 4 years ago, I still have Brisco and Nick took Mabel..

Bohdi was pretty well known around these parts for catching bobcats.. Terry was also pretty well known.. Depending on what part of his life you met him.. you either know him for good reasons or not so good reasons...

Hello Melanie, I was curious how close this cross is to the duke & ruger dogs I got from Zack Babb. If I knew I might be able to help shed a little light on these dogs from an outside perspective. Thankyou, John Warner.

John the Gritty dog of Marshall's is a littermate. His Huck dog would be a half brother to them.

Marshall, your dogs are probably about 21 inches tall :) Brisco is only about 23 inches.

J.C. described my duke dog to a tee. He is bigger than I like, but your pair are both smaller built. when I got him at about 17 months he was convinced he was the boss it took me awhile to convince him otherwise. duke is very easy to keep, he rarely gets run down or skinny he also recovers very quick usually overnite. I would say he is a do it all well rounded dog, from start to tree. I am sure he could do well on other types of game also, coon, bear, cougar. On track he is semi-silent, he only barks if he has the track, if he is barking it means he is pushing the track, in front or tree'd, on a lose he shuts up, if he opens after a lose it means he picked it up and the other dogs better get to him. He is fast enough to get out on them. I would call him a gamey no b.s. dog. He is what I call a catch dog. I got him at 17 months, next year at this time he should be a young finished cat dog, so he is plenty smart and learns quick. Dukes fault is he pushes the other dogs around and makes training the other dogs difficult, time will tell if I have broke him of this. This is just my experience with 1 dog, but if I thought this line was cull I would just make myself unavailable and not respond. I think enough of this 1 dog to get a female, Hopefully she is 10 to 15lbs smaller and a bit more timid or shy toward other dogs. Thankyou John Warner, if you or anyone else would like to talk dogs feel free to give a call. lately I am a, ranch hand, baby sitter, pup trainer. :| 541-572-5232

Hey John

Duke sounds a lot like his sire.. Other then Brisco is only about 60lbs in running shape..

He is a bit on the long side (long in the back) and most of his pups are... as is most of this line of dogs..

Brisco can be pushy.. I call him an asshole :) He knows I'm alpha and he also knows he is the second in command..

He has hunted with probably over 100 dogs in his hunting career (remember Nick use to use him when he guided in other states) and Brisco has NEVER EVER had ANY issues while hunting.. He could be a jerk around the house.. But if I stay on top of him, no issues..

I actually raise all my pups in his kennel..

He is tighter mouthed on track.. Shuts up when making a lose.. He doesn't stand on his head either.. He won't wallow on a track he can't move.. He is a stay put hard tree dog..

I haven't gotten to see any grandpups off him yet.. But am interested to see what this cross produces.. Since it goes back to him twice. :) I would hunt him reincarnated until I quit hunting..

I also raised/hunted with Mabel (wish I still had her) and have Jane..

Feel free to ask me any questions..

I find most people either love the line or hate it.. not much in between..

Thinking back on the best hounds I have owned over the years. I alway's seem to have a love/hate relationship with them. :? I was reading through my journal the other day & thinking what I was going to say about duke, and I realized he's come along way. some of my other dogs bark on track to much and I have a hard time telling whats going on with the race. but when duke is in the mix, the way he barks on track makes it much easier for me. also most of the time if duke really starts coming on if he's fully open and moving the track, it wont be long and a cats up. anyway enough about that hard headed booger, it would be neat to hear his old man in action. have a good day. john.

Cobalt, John, Thank you both for your honest evaluations and opinions on this line of dogs. I sure do like this line and would love to keep it going no matter what it takes. My male is a gamey little freak and i love it! This breeding has taken place. I have a few that will be going to friends and myself and then the rest will be for sale. Not sure how folks pick pups when they are 8 weeks or so, I just let my kids pick them. I will be taking the ones that have the best looking markings to me and other then that i think its a crap shoot. Thanks for all the interest frome everyone, they should make some bang up gamey little hounds.
