He was my bigest, I'm not sure what he weighed live weight but we've caught several over the years that were weighed in the 450 - 500 lb. range and i know this one was considerably larger. It's not a very good pic. but the only 1 I have of this 1.

Bob,

I'm with you, something doesn't quite add up mathwise. This year, I took the both hinds off a 388lb dressed bear and boned them out. We ended up with 4 gallon zip lock bags full of trimmed meat. Enough for about 2 full roasters, probably somewhere around 40lbs or so.

A friend of mine shot a 620 live bear last year and they took 2 55 gallon drums full of fat off it. A lot of the weight on a bear comes from the fat they build up for the winter. A big bear can have 8+ inches of fat on it's back. There really isn't a lot of meat on a bear once you trim it all up and bone it out. I'd say the hide and head alone would probably weight 100lbs on a big bear.

Course I'm not really sure, just guessing. I don't really pay attention to the weight after I've learned I wasn't even close on my guess before registering it. :D

i dont buy the 398 pounds of just meat either he would have had to been 700 pounds or better. becuase when you trim the fat off theres really not alot of meat there . when you kill a beef you most of the time yield around 30 to 40 percent of the hoof weight.

Is all I know is that's what the young guy told me, I didn't see or get any of it. Someone said something about 8" of fat, man we may see 2-3 inches and that's it. Of course I'm in sunny Ca. :beer Mike

never mind me lepcur just given you a hard time. on a serious note though the NC record bear is 886 pounds. it was one of those big coast agriculture bears. i would have seen them over 600 down there but never one that big but there are some that big down there.

black and Tan 79 : Shot by Dolly Partons Brother Coy Parton .We hunted with him up in Patten Maine Great Guy .

One thing that may have led to that size though was that bear had plenty of Natural Food tear round and was also feeding on Hog carcusses from a nearby hog farm .

Mike that is a valuable lesson right there. Never believe what the "guy" told you. A young guy will try to BS you to look cool and an old guy BS you cause they like to tell stories.

I was the one who said something about the fat on a back of a big bear. A standard fillet knife here is 6", and on some big bears you can stick the full knife in and not hit muscle. The biggest bears I've seen have more than that. It is a pretty common occurence in WI. I have seen some nicer boars who are real lean too, but most big bears have a bunch of fat on them.
