This has me looking foward to next year. I have never been to anything like this and I am looking foward to seeing some damn good hounds, meeting some fellow houndsmen, and learning some new country. I already have the four hounds picked that I will be bringing

Exactly what would be illeagle about it? It is during training season, no bears are going to be taken, as long as you have a current Idaho hunting license and hound permit, I dont see were it would be illeagle at all. It wouldnt be any different than going there to run bears during training season.

It is a contest offering prizes and money, taking place on public land and concerns wildlife. In Colorado, people involved would be in jail by now. Probably worth checking into.

It would be illegal in Washington. They used to have similar hunts a long time ago and they got banned. Anything involving big game is off limits. All I'm saying is check it out.

It would be illeagle in Washington because you cant run bears with hounds in Washington. My guess it would be illeagle in Montana and Oregon as well.

I dont see were it would be illeagle to do this, they hold fishing torneyments for game fish on public lakes and they give out cash prizes, and they dont even practice catch and release like this would be. So what would be the difference?

That would be a question for Game & Fish and the state legislators.
It boils down to control by the non-hunting voting masses, for some reason they seem to think it is OK w/fish, but not OK w/mammals. We used to have some high stakes prairie dog shoots, but got crucified on it. Now they suck up unwanted prairie dogs w/hydro vacs and put them up for adoption or relocation. Just one phone call would clear this up for you. You never know, it may be legal in some states.

Ya think?

These hunts were banned before they outlawed hounds. All I'm saying is you better check on it before you get too far into it.

Sounds like a great time for sure. The only problem I see is that all the out of state guys or gals will have to draw the hound handlers permits to play.

The IHA has been holding competition bear hunts for around 30 some years and it is a ton of fun when the right people and hunters get involved with it. For many years they were held in Idaho City. Then they were moved to Ramage Meadows out of Ola. They were held at some other places too, but never held out of Council because of a lack of location big enough to hold a comp hunt of any numbers. I believe they quit last year or the year before because of a lack of interest being shown now a days.
To compete animals with a exchange of anything of monetary value in Idaho is considered gambling. To get around this a certain part of the proceeds must go to a non-taxable charity. The IHA's comp hunts use to be a 60/40 split. Then it's called a fund raiser and not a gambling event. Of course a Organization that falls under this criteria, like the IHA, must be promoting the fund raiser. Then it's up to the hunters themselves to follow all of Idaho's F&G's laws and rules of hunting, as already mentioned. Hope this helps and good luck with it. Anything that brings the hunters of Idaho together is a good thing in my book. No matter if some thinks it means little or not. Things like these are where ideas start to make our sport and hunting better for all.

I couldn't see this any different than any other dog field trial. If it is in season then I imagine you can hunt as much as you want. You can take as many pictures as you want. The money being exchange could be a little bit of a problem, but like Dennis said there are ways around it. Nice Job Dennis.
Liontracker last time I checked we can still shoot Prarie Dogs and Coon hunts are also still held here.
