I'll put in my 2 cents. Where we go it would be tough to pull a sled, deep snow, partly open rivers, brush, ect. It only holds 3 dogs but the right 3 dogs can catch anything. With the right ramp, I load it right on a pickup, no trailer needed. The suspension needs to be beefed up due to the weight of the dogs, heavy duty springs with the addition of a helper coil spring on the shock. Oh, and it has to be white so you can't find it when you go for a walkabout.lol
I had the same set up on an Alpine twin track yrs back, found it was to heavy and was stuck more than I wanted in the deep snow .\
With the sleigh I can unhook and break a trail up real steep ridges and get a path...but I can see your rig has it's plus' as well.

Hey guys what's the best brand, size, and model of machine that's works the best for our style of riding?

I ride polaris 98 rmk 700 has enough power and dont weigh a million pounds like skidoo yamaha or arctic cats jmo also have 95 polaris touring for my old man to put around on

I have a 01 and 03 700 polaris rmk. great lion hunting sleds. my dogs even like to ride them. start first pull every time.

Interesting, I just sold an 01 rmk 800. That thing was so big it sucked. It was 10 feet long and weighed a ton. I have a 99 touring 500 that dad road all winter it seems perfect. Surprised me both of you have 700.

your 800 probably had atleast a 151 track on it, witch is atleast 40lbs heavier and 12"+ than the 136 and the polaris gen 2 700 are about the most reliable engine you can get in a sled. also if you dont find any tracks you have the power to go screw around with some drift jumping and hill climbing

that 800 for some reason has always been a weak link for polaris. the 600's and 700's are and have always been bullett proof. if you look on ksl classifieds for utah id wy etc you can pick those 800 s up a dime a dozen. the 700 in my opinion has earned it's name. "Rocky Mountain King"! still haven't found a sled that is fun to get unstuck yet though.
the old indy 400's were perty easy to get unstuck.

Yah, your right it's a 151 track. Are the 550 to under powered?

I think 550 have plenty af power to haul a few dogs I used to have a 440 and it did fine just had to keep it wide open hauling dogs up a hill

Thanks guys, once this 800 is out of my garage this weekend, I'm going shopping. I had some guys that hunt off of sled all winter tell me to stay away from the bigger sleds because they are too heavey and you don't need all that power. Maybe I will look for a 600, something in the middle. Thanks again.

the yamaha was great on the trails,comfy and warm but in the hills and sidehills it was a bear. you had to be an expert mountain rider to keep her right side up. much too heavy especially if a guy hunts alone like i do. looking to get something that is built a little closer to the ground. next box i build will be also have a lower center of gravity. tried trailers, be they tended to tip way too easy and too often.

Im new here but was wondering if anyone would give an opinion on a sled im looking at for lion hunting. it is a 95 Skidoo 583 Rave with low miles and a paddle track for $800. I dont know if it is air or liquid cooled.

its probably water cooled
its a heavy b@stard imo and little high priced but it would do you just fine good sled I wouldnt pay more than 600 unless its mint condition

I have a 1991 Polaris Indy Sport touring sled, fan cooled, that I use for cat hunting. Very reliable sled and gets good mileage. I pull a sled behind with the dogs once I locate a track. My snowmobile is only a 340, but it gets the job done great and very rarly does it get stuck. It will go just about anywhere but the real deep powder.
