I started my pack from pups. I treed my first lion at the first part of my second year. and when I say I treed it I mean I litterally walked a track out with my pups until it treed. after that I started catching about any snow lion I turned out on. never attempted a bobber until about four years into it, by then my dogs had seen a grundle of lion chases and were starting to catch even on just patchy snow. I caught the first bobber I tuned out on though it took three times dumping out on it before they finally took it. Bears came about three years ago and has been the hardest for me. this third year chasing bears I finally got it done with just my dogs and caught quit a few. they were just getting the hang of it when season ended, so next year will tell all.

I guess my story is similar yet different....I hunted with my buddies for a year or so with my pup tagging along. We got my pup under a lion on the first day of season that year. The next time I went out alone, he treed two by himself that day. Then I got to thinking that this was easy so I got another pup and managed to nearly ruin both of them that year. Didn't catch alone for the rest of the season. The next year my dogs were under a lion tree each of the first three days of season. I guess what I'm trying to say is... the first one isn't always the hard one, it's being able to do it on a steady basis that challenged me.

threw a pup of mine in behind the old hound today,he was a good twenty minutes behind him. he took to the trail opened on it and the next time i saw him he was face barking a tom. it was his first track, first hunt. when we passed where he started the track he wanted to run it again....lol

Don't give up, Dan. You must let those dogs go!! Even if they screw up or get lost, that is how they learn. And that is how you'll learn. Experience in the woods, alone, is the best trainer. Don't let that pup go, though, leave it in the truck or at home. I don't care if it has all the talent in the world. 6 month old pups running behind unexperienced dogs is a bad mix.
Ridge can do it, I bet. If you don't take the leash off and let him run free of your control, you are going to ruin him.

I have hunted with dan and ridge and would have to agree. dan is a great guy and ridge is a great dog. b u t........ if ridge got 20 yards out of his sight he would freakin wig and call him back. the dog really wanted to go. when we all piled in the truck I told dan to throw ridge in and lets go. he said, "In the back"???? he would have let him ride up front if I had let him. I think at this point the attactchment is so much with that dog that he better keep him a pet and get a dog that he doesn't care if he don't come back to hunt with. I mean nothing derogatory towards dan or his dog because he came down and truely hunted his tail off with us. but that dog has missed his chance IMO because he is a companion to dan and not a tool to catch game. hope I don't offend, think the world of dan and his dog.

Treed my first lion this year, I started last winter. I was by myself, and it was the first lion track I have ever dumped on. It was very exciting. took about a hour of working the track before the cat was jumped and treed shortly after. That week was actualy very good for me, treed lion on a sunday morning. treed a lion on a tuesday afternoon after work. Then I stayed out past dark and treed 2 coons and ran one into a hole.

Thought I would add on here that I treed my first bobber this weekend. My dog has only been on a handful of bobcat tracks. I got pretty lucky though I really dont think the track was more than 5 minutes old.

Well I have been hound hunting for awhile and yesterday I caught my first bear with just my dogs! A sow with two cubs caught by just my older dog. I am proud of her.

My uncle gave me three pups. Lived a long way from him. No Houndsman willing to help a 18 year old kid at that time. Took two years then it was game on.

Before I started less than a year ago ,I was tossed up between getting pups or buying good dogs.I ended up buying two finished dogs and two started dogs from Jeff Allen.I had three cats within 4 weeks,it was well worth the coin, but I will never have the feeling of watching my own pups that I trained at a tree.I do have a new pup that is my first to train on my own now.she is 13 weeks old now.
