It comes from what I call tail a tail cracking dog. A happy , hard hunting dog whips his tail or cracks it back and forth. This centrofugises (sp) the blood to the end of the tail and ruptures the veins when he whips it against brush or even the inside of the dog box.
When the puppies are born (before eyes are open ) take your pocket knife and cut off the very end joint of the tail , about where the hair come to a point. This will eliminate the bloody tail and you'll still have a balance beam . Which is what the tail is. Watch a video of gazing dogs or even a Mt. lion using their tails on turns and just before contact with prey and you'll see the importance of the tail. Don't dock 'em tip 'em.
