In a culvert with a cat, was a few years ago. Yea, you will need tracking equipment.

How long it took him to get that cat?

I'm thinking he was in there 45 minutes or so. Was a cold day that day, in the -20's.
If ya ask me you will be waisting a lot of time if all ya plan on catching cats with is Jagds, not saying it can't be done but you would be better off getting ya a hound or two and use your energy walking out tracks with them. But what do I know, I'm just a rookie when it comes to bobbers .

Yea my brother and i might go with our friends for maybe the first couple of hunts cause they got this red bone. It's going to be hard but after a while i think my jagds would get use to it, or what i think But really looking forward to it too! Im about 19 now and planing to get into more hunts with my boys! My boy joker cant take on a coon cause he a bay dog, but my new pup is a hell as tough fighter when it comes to fighting so looking forward to many hunts coming up! With all these good info i think i would have a better idea now Thanks

What is a jagd? I have never heard of one and what are they breed for?

A jagdterrier is wat they called a hunting terrier from germany, they are able and have the skills to hunt most games, they are a little bigger then patterdales. From out of the US they use jagds for mostly ground work and boars. I live up in Minnesota so i havent really use jagds for anything yet, only squirrels, but planing to go for cats this coming up season and see how they do

I'm with Bud but I would add a little to that. If Jagds are your thing, than go for it and bring a leatherman or a set of neddle-nosed pliers because it's just a matter of time, but your still going to have a blast if they have what it takes to lock one down...but, if your looking to be a cat-man, your going to eventually put hounds into the mix. Now, there are a few Jagds out there that can run a track and have great track sense but over time I think your going to have a much harder time finding those Jags than you will finding a hound to do that kind of track work.

To tell you the truth, I'm kind of jelous. This all sounds like the place I was in when I started running dogs and that was a great time that I'll always remember with great fondness. When and if I make it to my70's, 80's or even 90's, this is one of the times of my life I will be thinking about from my easy chair. I envy you to a point but you've got a lot of work ahead of you. Enjoy it.

yea i guess im a jagd man I love them cause they have the ability to go hunt any thing. Also they are not really big but they act like they are able to do everything! thats what i like about them. The first reason that i bought one was so that i can go hog hunting sometimes, but since im still kind of young i wont be able to go by myself. Thats why i decided to use my jagds for what is available to me, but one of my jagd is not so hard on small game, he bays too much and not enough killing, wish he would be able to change but i guess thats not going to happen cause hes almost 3 now. How do u guys get an older dog to go in for the kill? Me and my bro was talking about selling him to an hog hunter cause he would do much much better on hogs! But hes my first dog and i dont want to sell him, so do u guys get a dog to be harder on game!?

It sure is easy to find a Jagd that will fight...that's not much of a problem. The thing is, you don't need a dog that fights for cats. Cats are worth to much money to have a dog putting the hurt on them. If your Jagd trees squirrels, you have a lot more of the traits in that dog that are more likely going to help it hunt cats successfully than the average Jagd. It's kind of hard to find really good tree dogs in the breed. There are not a lot of sires in the Jagds that produce a high number of tree dogs. I think that you'll find that having a dog that bays and also has the drive of the Jagd will be more important to catching cats than owning 10 dogs with piles of fight in them. There is another side to it though. You would have to determine this one. If a Jagd does not have a pretty fair amount of fight in it, you will have to figure out if is due to a lack of drive to get game or if it is simpley a trait that is what it is. Some dogs that bay will never quit and have no shortage of drive and some bay because of a shotage of drive. If your dog has the drive but just tends towards baying, I think you have a better version for cats...that is if you want the Jagd to accomplish the whole hunt without help from a hound to get the cat started. You might be better off than you think.

Dan: You hit on something that I have believed for many years, fight and drive are two different things. I do not like aggression in a dog but lots of drive. The best bear dogs that I have seen have drive and will bay a bear for ever up close and hard but will not try to fight the bear. Most people believe and breed for fight, I think you loose brains and drive when you do this. Just my opinion which I have had a lot of examples to show me this thru the years.
