Mike I have been hesitant to post on your comments. Don/t have any real knowledgement of what as taken place in salem. However I do know houndmen who have decided not to donate any funds towards getting bear and cougar back because they feel somewhat as you that there is a lot of talk, but the state assocation has backed off when things got hetic. I do not believe ODF&W is on the average houndmans side. Measure 18 has created too many worthless projects that bring in tax dollars to spend on so called studies that some state employees enjoy. Collaring cougars and giving selected houndmen a reciever so they can go locate a collared cougar and tree it when they wish is not my ideal of tax money well spent. Could that be why ODF&W hAS BEEN FORCED TO PAY FOR A DEAD HOUND OR TWO? Al

Prior to 2007, I too had me head in the sand and paid little attention. We had a law passed that would have allowed sport hunters not Government to do the control work. The first report I read, stated a cost of 310 k for 101 cougar killed by either Government or contract hunters. That was the time I got involved. I was persistant with my Dist. Rep and she made two House bills happen and now working with a whole host of others we now have another bill ready to go in Salem. Many things went south as you can expect over the last few years with emotions and when hound hunters get involved. We are a special breed and most are pretty thick skinned.Starting with me at the top of the heap....Odfw has exploited many laws to suit an agenda that only serves their best interest. Bird nesting is one classic example, you possibly were involved helping draft that law as were a few of the old time hound hunters. Any way, how could that be attached to a hound? The list just goes on an on....
I sure hope we can convince all the guys to get involved in this current movement. This one is exciting for simple reasons, if passed will give those reluctant foresters who are forced to use snares the ability to use sport hunters instead. This bill will make hunting in Oregon legal in all the counties that matter. We don't bear hunt in Portland anyhow! Thank you for your input....I just logged on and just got in ahead of the storm front....I pulled down on a landing and was sitting, poured up a cup of coffee, listening to my dogs work a cold track and spotted a peeled tree that was two year old damage. As i sat thinking about the past, it hit me pretty hard. It was 1983, 30 years ago when I hunted professionally for the timber company.... We have missed two decades and many camp fire stories and suffered the loss of our youth getting introduced to the sport. I need no more than that to drive me as hard as I would have driven that culprit bear back in the day!

Sorry,I missed your post. I deleted a few earlier for my own reasons. I'm pretty well stuck on my analogy and sympathetic towards the folks who hunt for fun. Profit hunting is okay. I just think when a dollar bill is attached, it has a tendency to sway your position. Kind of like having a dog in the hunt and being judge!
We need keep our personal positions aside and concentrate on the big picture.Starting with me.... We have a great chance to advance our hunting rights. I sure don't want to underscore the efforts of Ousda, members in their political lobby. Any other person such as a friend who lives up the North Santiam canyon and his son who have dedicated time, effort and $ to make this happen. OOC has taken the reins and stepped up to the plate....I'm comfortable enough in doing something behind the scenes to assist in driving this ball into the end zone!
The thing we all need to remember is, Sport hunters, not Government are the intended management tools for the State, any and all States! This wrong will right itself simply because right always wins! Take care and have fun in that damn coast brush! I was once your age and hunted in your back yard, now all I want to do is drive by, look out the window and reminisce as I drive to the beach!
