Navigating the Backcountry

Use to use sense of direction and the lay of the land but now its called a garmin. I have a feeling though its going to bite hard one of these days because now dont pay attention just go. Lol

Electronics fail so if you can't find your way back without them you have no reason even leaving the truck in my eyes. Andy

If you are hunting a new area try and study a map of the country prior to hunting also common sense plays a big role pay attention to land marks before leaving your vehicle pay attention to your surrondings andhe same when you are after the dogs. Andy

You know I have hunted many a year and have never needed anything but my instinct while hunting in the day light hours and have only gotten turned around a couple of times during the nite while hunting and would have loved to have had a gps system then. I was hunting in a new area down in a river bottom that had bamboo that must have been 20 ft tall so you could not get a good look at the stars/moon and most of the time you could only see straight up. And as anyone who has hunted in bamboo knows one section pretty much looks the same as another and if you are not real careful it does not take to long a time to get turned around especially if you are following the dogs.

After the dogs caught the coon we were lucky as the area was not used much so we just back tracked ourselves out of the area. No telling how much quicker we could have made the trip had we a GPS so we could have walked a straight line, or as much of a straight line back to the truck rather than following our tracks rambling around the bottom. The area I am talking about was about two miles square all covered in bamboo. So while instinct will do the job 99 % of the time there will be occasions where a GPS would do wonders for anyone.
