Well put TRC. I'f you had much experiance with the G bear you would realize they are quicker on their feet and have a longer reach and after 2 or 3 years of age won't tree. You better have dogs with respect for the long claw bear or have a kennel with about 30 hounds if you want to run them . I will guarentee you will lose a lot of dogs. Dogs that have a cement between their ears won't survive.

I think running grizzlies with hounds would be like sending the dogs to slaughter. The outcome of what would happen would be inevitable.

These Grizzly bears are getting scarier by the minute.
I'm not saying Grizzlies are easy to catch or they are not harmful to dogs. What I'm saying, friends and people I know catch Grizzlies all the time. Grizzlies cannot kill a dog by just looking at them and impossible to catch. They are catch-able, and it is done all the time.

I'm not sayin a grizz is un -catchable. But here is the reason they will kill more dogs then a Black Bear. Blackies aren't by nature agressive animals, there is a fight or flight deal and a Black bear will most of the time take the flight method of escape, were the grizz on the other hand is an agressive animal by nature and will most of the time take the fight method of escape. Now Black bears with flat eat a dog to, and Ike your right about what your gonna catch both of'em in, but a black bear is for one can be anywere from 200-300 pounds lighter then a grizz and have cat like claws, a grizz has claws made for slashing on the swing and is more likely to line out dogs and kill'em one at a time til there all gone. They might catch'em but all the time isn't how it goes. My uncle lives in southern Alaska and says they might catch 1 out of 10 they run, and they are alot faster then a black bear, both bears are omnivierious but the grizz kill's more game to eat then a black bear, black bear hardly ever kill game unless it just easy as hell, they most of the time eat already dead game.

Catch, I never said it can't be done and it has been done but you are talking about the top of the food chain not a black bear. More times then not a grizz will eventually whip the dogs and chase them back to the handler. (In that case at least you cold get a shot) In my experiance a 500lb blackie is a good bear, it might be mean but they are usually slow. Not the case with grizz. A 500 lb grizz is an average sow or a small boar and trust me the difference is like a cougar and a leopard. One has a lot more heart.
Ike I don't no know what grizz you are talking about but in most of BC long claws and black bears live in the same habitat, except for the odd bear digging marmots in the alpine. The only difference is the g bear gets the thickest berry patches the best grass and the best fishing holes. I can see that you have never been on a coastal salmon river hunting grizz before, even hounds would have a tough time getting through that vegetation.

Dude, no offense but I talk to people that have more experience killing Grizzlies with dogs than most people see. Maybe their Grizzlies are pussies I don't know. They kill a lot of Grizzlies, their dogs are not chased off and they loose very few to the bear. They have a web site and I will post the link.
Ike, we have Grizzlies and this fall me and you will have get together and go catch one. I have tried several times to get on one but only found Black Bears. This fall when bear opens again I will be in search for the hump back bear.

A few years back in Bella Coola a guy wounded a grizz. Concerned he phoned the local concervation officer who in turned called the local predator houndsman to track the bear. The hounds took off from the truck on a hot track, moments later before the guys guns were even loaded here comes the hounds with the bear on their tails. As the bear and the hounds past the CO the bear grabbed the guy by the upper arm and started picking him up and shaking him, the hounds man finally got a kill shot in and knowbody died. All those hounds are topnotch bear and cat hounds and when that bear told them to run they said how fast.

ive seen the best dog i ever knew of --- run from a bear-- in an open hayfield--- the bear would chase him 200 yards
he didnt quit- he was back at it as soon as bear stopped chasing him -
a buddy killed that bear after an all day deal ---
would have been easy to shoot it rite there in the hayfield first thing in the am -- lol but we didnt have any intention of killing him till after watched him chase our prize hounds
over the years ive seen a few dogs that were pretty good on the rougher bear -- they would grab a bear , when they could., run when they had to - lived to old age- treed hundreds of bear -
i not sure id call them gritty dogs -at least not stupid gritty
- but they were real stickers--
quite often a mean bear was killed with them - after the gritty ones had been hurt -- and werent there anymore -- if i had to hunt grizzlys thats the type dog id want-- im glad we dont have any grizzlys here --
occasionaly get on a black bear that thinks hes a grizzly -
ive seen a few black bear chase dogs down- over and over
it wouldnt hurt my feelings if i never saw another one like that --
i think the dog that handles that type of bear might work on grizzly --
ive never seen a grizzly - lol so thats bout how much my advice on hunting them is worth lol

I guess Ike next time your up this way bring a truck load of hounds and I will find you a grizz everyday to dump them on. Maybe 3 or 4 a day if your lucky. I would be willing to bet your truck will be lighter going home.

that could be very entertaining.

That was my point all along they do damage. I have one dog a border collie lab shepard cross which chases grizz. She has grit a lot of brains mixed with a lot of speed. She is smart enough to get the bear moving and then come back to me . But will take a chunk of hair if the bear comes at you. She will only chase them if told. Really just an insurance policy when taking clients out on the horses.
