Mark brought up what I was thinking. Hunt him by himself. I bet he barks half as much . I had a dog that did the same thing . She always had to be in the front. Put her on a cat by herself and she sounded like a real catdog. if he can catch cats by himself then sell him as that. a good cat dog solo. a blow up the track dog with company.

Thats where i was headed with that JC. Been my experience that they are a complete different dog when by themselves.

I think there is an important point that you guys are overlooking. This dog seems to be his best strike dog. It sounds like he is a very excited dog on a race which causes issues which might improve with age. In hunting situations where a strike dog is essential to start a race a good strike dog is valuable. Most dogs will learn who to honor, I believe the key is to know how many dogs you are running and what quality. Maybe you are running to many dogs or maybe the dogs are all younger than he is. Most dogs I have run after several races would ignore a babbling idiot that overruns a track and will find it for themselves. Most pups want to be where the excitement is and will learn which dog to try to keep up with that will get them to exciting places.

The dog is 3 1/2 years old and been on a ton of game. Assuming the other dogs are younger i would bet that if you took him out of the pack you would have a better chance of the others stepping up the striking and starting than you will correcting his fault. It all comes down to what the guy thats feeding them can tolerate.

You guys bring up a crucial point, he should be hunted by himself (which he has not been) and see what happens. I'll keep you posted on results.

I assume you are talking about Floyd's dog peewee ? If you are do not waste your time I have hunted with the dog numerous times and he has cost me cats every time . The dog is a cull .

As stated the dog may do well by himself or not. Try that. One of my rules for a dog is that I will put up with faults as long as it does not take away from treeing bobs. If a dog in my pack takes away from my goal of treeing bobcats he or she is out of there. Everyone has their own reasons for hunting with hounds[ listen to dogs cold trail, a good jump race ect..the bottom line for me is to catch the game that I hunt. Is it more important for you to start a cat or to finish a race ? It's your call. Dewey

All I know. Is when the animal you are trailing. Consistently crawls up its azz, and eats it self. Instead of ending up on the wood. 100% of the time there is a dog problem somewhere in the group.

Take care, Willie

He does not start 95% of the cats !! Not only does he over run the track he will false tree and will hit a road and run 500 to 600 yards barking every breath like he has got the cat! He has screwed my dogs up For the last time! Floyd's been trying to sale this dog and he is junk. I hunted with the dog last week he over run the track 4 times when we had the cat squatting he don't over run it just alittle bit he will go 300 to 400 yards barking every breath !

There's a time for correcting then there's a time for culling a dog. If we can't tell the difference between the two might as well get rid of all the dogs because your not going to have anything anyhow.

Been a year since I hunted with the dog, and was along the night he was bought. We treed two cats that night and caught one on the ground. He struck all three. During the few months I was there I never witnessed an empty tree but can attest to some wrecks. But we also treed some cats.

One of the obstacles I have in the large pack
Hunting is identifying and resolving these types of issues. My out-west hunting mind set struggles with more than 4 hounds on the ground. My goal in this thread was to help an old friend make some decisions and to offer him help if it seems feasible. I've been guilty of telling him to hang on to him, simply because of what I personally saw the dog do.

My next guidance to him will be after I've put the hound on the ground by himself a few times. I'll be there in early November.

Appreciate all the input.

Enjoyed reading every ones input. I will only say never seen a perfect bobcat hound, & if someone has a hound, or a pack of hounds, that catches 100% on bobcat , hunting in terrain like we have here in western Oregon, you are a blessed man. Al

I have hunted a couple that would over run a track like you are saying opening the hole time most of these dogs were young and if only hunted once a week they would act over excited and end up over running the track hunt them hard they seemed to have less energy and focused more and with age they calmed down and figure it out as far as older dogs go I have never found a cure. Seems a tired hounds a good hound as far as young dogs goJust what I have experienced wish I had better advice for ya. Good luck.

A dog like that would never make it to 3 1/2 years in my pack. I figured this overrunning issue was more like a 20 yard overrun on corners of a cold track. A 3 1/2 year old dog over running 300+ yards barking every breath is a CULL.

The biggest move I have made to make my pack better as a whole was to decrease the speed and competitiveness. At one point I thought speed killed cats....now I say track accuracy. Think the same with my beagles.
One thing I have noticed that the tendency to over run tracks and being mouthy show at a early age and no matter how much time you put on a dog they never get much better when it comes to over running. A dog running crazy in the check area babbling causes huge confusion. I'm sure there are people out there that will say you can correct dogs for over running but I say bull!!!! Babbling yes to a degree but I just as soon pull the pin on that dog and put my efforts and time into something that don't have them faults and if I choose to use the dog in my breeding program later on I wont have to worry about those faults resurfacing.
