In regards to Merlo's post. An area big enough that it takes 8 hours to check, will have a hard time to pressure cats to change there habits. I also have noticed that cats move less and less the deeper the snow becomes. I also believe cats do a lot of wandering around for no apparent reason when there is no snow or only several inches. I have turned on bad ends of cats and figured out the multiple cat tracks I had on a 6 mile stretch of road were all made by one cat. My theory is when you get deep snow cats will only walk to hunt. So assuming that 90% of a cat's walking is just meandering around and 10% is actual hunting in deep snow it will appear like there are hardly any cats around. Most western roads are on the side of canyons with the creeks on the bottom side, which has the best habitat, with the roads loaded with deep snow a cat never has the incentive to cross it except through culverts. In those situations a good strike hound might could be helpful but if deep snow is an issue then usually cold temperatures are an issue to where you don't want freeze your strike dog.
