If nothing else, you are spending time with the kids and teaching them something they probably wouldn't learn in school. And if you are successful with this, you guys will be able to make some cool stuff out of the leather and the kids will have good memories of that.

Keep us updated.

USA Fox and Furs does not tan anything. They send it out to have tanned then charge you twice as much. They are horribly expensive. There are only a couple tanneries now that will tan a hide into leather (hair off). And only one that I know of that has a machine large enough to do a hide as large as a moose. The other company will cut your hide in half so it fits through their fleshing machine.
The cost is expensive, but no where near $1000. They all charge by the square foot. A moose hide would be around $300-400 depending on size.

It's up to you with what you think will be easier with that membrane. You might be going too deep if you are pulling hair through the skin though, in which case you might want to leave it on until you have tanned the hide and then just try to break it into the leather. I wouldn't be surprised to see a fair bit of hair coming off of the hide now, but there will probably be enough left once you are done for it to still look OK, I don't think the freeze would have hurt it. I had a deer that I froze half a dozen times between being able to flesh it and it was fine.

In your 6th picture, what you are looking for is how the hide looks on the left hand side. It should be pretty well white. A little bit of blood staining is ok as that will come out when you wash the hide, but you want all of the meat and fat gone for sure as this won't tan and will spoil the hide.

All things considered though I would say you are doing good.

This is the picture I am talking about. How things look on the left is what you are shooting for.

All of that pink 'marbeling' that you see on the skin in this picture is what is going to harden up and need to be peeled off once you tan the hide. I know it is pretty tough to get off right now, but it does come off fairly easy once it is dry. It will rip off in sheets, you just have to be careful as it is pulling off because it can rip funny and go all the way through the hide.

What there is a fleshing machine you say full cry hounds. Where would a person get one of these for doing hides?

The other question was how many times can I freeze and rethaw this hide I'm going to have to soon I'm hoping to get all the meat and fat off before I freeze it . but does the hide get harder to flesh after you freeze and thaw it and ya I'm hoping to have at least a small piece to tan hair on thanks again

If you do many hides each year, you'll eventually want a flashing machine. I like the Dakota IV, but there are others. Do a search on YouTube to see how they work.
