Running dogs locating

Clyde, didn't mean anything negative towards your dog's. How many California, Oregon, and Washington guys made it that way to run with you?

10-12 from CA area & none from the Northwest. It's a pretty good distance & I would like to take hounds and go hunt out there. But understand that is not that easy to do, due to hunt areas, regulations, and cost for non-residents?

I have had a number call and visit, asking about buying a hound. I tell them all that they likely would be better served to buy one from that area & that is from information provided from hunters that have taken hounds from my area out there and not had the performance there as they had always done here?

Same with calls wanting to hunt snow country. My experience is not good doing that. Your better off, I think, buying one that has done well in that type of hunt condition.

BUT--I tell everyone that the older I get--the less I know or am sure about! Especially in hounds and trying to catch cats.

Dogs from different areas preform different some acclimate some dont. Be it running dog or full hound. Andy

I would agree there's no perfect dog or perfect pack but sure have seen some good ones in both categories.Sometimes a difference of opinions occurs when we think our way is the right way or the only way.Most people have reasons for doing things the way they do and you're not going to change that,why even try ?
I think it would be fun to hunt good dogs in different parts of the country.For example I hunt your country with my dogs and you hunt my country with your dogs . If there are significant differences in terrain and /or weather i don't believe our respective dogs would do that well in the other guys hunting territory.Now if they have time to get acclimated to it it may be a different story .
As others have said hunt and enjoy the type of hounds that get your motor running and let the other guy hunt what he likes and remember there will always be differences of opinion but that doesn't make the other guy wrong !

I have read on here several times where a real cat dog is a real cat dog anwhere it is put down. I have to agree as i have seen it and know guys that have done it. Know a guy that left the west coast earlier this week and went to sub zero temps and and ultra dry climate and caught a bobcat the first day and a lion the second. Havent been in touch to see if there were anymore catches. Dont put limits on your dogs or anybody elses.

I can see that Mark but i've seen good dogs come out here that hung up on the first windfall or rockpile they came to.
Had a buddy take a good cat dog to Oaklahoma and the heat and humidity sure took the fire out of him .
I and some buddies believe some good dogs will have to get acclimated to some different conditions.

I have limited experience but have taken dogs from the Western Oregon and hunted in Eastern Oregon, Eastern California, Southern California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona And caught lion and bobcats sometimes in the same day. Maybe some dogs need time to adjust to the changes but I feel a good dog is a good dog where ever he is hunted. Maybe it is just the hunter that is limited himself and his dogs. Good hunting Dewey

Agree with you 100%. If they can start and run a bobcat, I will listen & listen! I do like to see the cat, prefer in a tree, but the kill left me a long time ago.

Always wanted to try one of your Topper hounds from pup up. Hear nothing but good things about them.

I have three cat hunters from the Northeast that have bought pups and just hunt snow after they became old enough. They all are very high on them and tell me they have made cathounds.

Two are on list for pups when they are available at this time.

I think it is roughness and type of country I have to hunt? I take them 100+miles West, Northwest, or Southwest and they locate and tree.

Email or call me and I will put you in contact with a great guy & cathunter from your part of the world that purchased a finished hound going on 16 months ago from me. Had him about 7-10 days and took him hunting by his self. Saw two seperate bobcats one afternoon and locating/treeing was as good as you could ask for. Good enough he purchased another finished hound this fall.

1bludawg I have seen similar things here in Oklahoma from out of area hounds. Know, and consider friends, who hunted 50 years plus in CA & Northwest for years who have told me that they used to come to OK, MO, & AR buying hounds. Those hounds where raised would be good to nice tree hounds. BUT, may take them 90 days to acclimate out West.
Have taken my pack to West TX, NM, AZ, WY and treed bobcat and lion.

It sure makes for something to study on?

I agree with your comments also Clyde . You can take pups from other parts of the country ,bred by good cat hunters, and raise them in your state without problems .You can take trained dogs and put them in areas where they're introduced to situations or conditions they haven't encountered before and it may take them time to adjust .
