Yeah, I think I know what you are talking about Pete, but from my knowledge there is nothing but accidental "freaks of nature" in hounds/dogs here in Norway that will hold their liquids when those big brown bears starts stompin' their front leggs in the ground making it shake.....

Re: Collies... -For real?
You know Pete you are wrong about collies not hanging with a grizz I know of a number of dogs that put the run on these bears alone. My friends dog is 1/8 blue tick and 7/8 bordercollie and its faced off and put the run on many g-bears. Another rancher has 1/2 collie 1/2 catahoula, mind you they all ways have 6 or 8 that bay up grizz quite often, they do lose afew from time to time. My dog Buffy is a real bear freak, you even say the word bear and she goes nuts, She goes riding with my wife every day from May to October and on command will go in and pull hair if a bear is acting aggressive. All these dogs are raised in bear country where it is not uncommon to see six or more grizz and a dozen blacks in a day looking for bears. We have so many grizz you have to treat them like trash even then the hounds can't seem to help them selves from time to time.

Re: Collies... -For real?
Are your hounds/dogs hunting for the grizzlies or are they just going at them when you tell them to?
Some dogs here will bark at at brownbear they accidently meet in the forest, but very few, if any will really put effort into finding one...
I could hunt a Collie cross for what ever it would hunt, Pete. Lynx would be great, but I think it sounds like they would be even better on wolverine.

Re: Collies... -For real?
Hans you can't hunt grizz right where I live but having as many as we have you tend to run in to them often enough. These collies are used for protection when hiking ,riding, and moving cows for the most part. The ones that are hound crosses of some sort including my own are have been used to track wounded or problem grizz, most of the time only 1 or 2 dogs are used, there quick side to side cutting motion seems to keep them safe for the mast part. My bitch which is my main riding dog sees a lot of action in a year. With me she waits for a command to go ahead if I want to run a bear. With my wife she seems to know what frame of mind the grizz is in, sometimes she runs it other times she stays at my wifes side and keeps a good eye on the bear. If my 8 yearold daughter is in the group of riders she runs every bear and catches back up later on in the ride. The nices thing about these crosses are how easy they handle very little work goes into training ,unlike my hounds.

I would really like to have a good border collie/hound cross dog someday to fool with. Actually what I really want is to have a collie lurcher/hound cross of some sort. I guess preferably a bear dog type hound ya know. I just think there are some real opportunities there that most do not seem to understand.

My uncle Robert used to run a Border Collie with his hounds. He claimed the Border Collie would look ahead and see the cat moving and go after it , dragging the hounds with him. I've never tried it myself, but it sounds good.

Re: Collies... -For real?
I bred a real good Walker coondog to a border collie gyp a few years ago. I didnt really keep any of the pups cause different people wanted them supposedly. They didnt do shit with them and they didnt really get a chance in life. I wish I had it to do all over again. The only problem I saw with the pups was that they all took the build of their daddy and he was a big ole chuckle headed walker dog. One of them methodical type hounds that did every thing right just about and got the job down in a fairly timely manner but he didnt have that snap and pop that some of the better speedy type dogs I have seen. Of course them type dogs make a bunch of mistakes when they are young but if they are smart they become great instead of very good. Anyhow enough rambling. I wish I had a good collie lurcher gyp to breed one of my July dogs to and keep a pair or so of pups and give them a whirl and "CATCHIN" game.

- Let me know if those thoughts ever come through Dan and I'll put in a bid on a couple of pups.

Re: Collies... -For real?
I have a buddy in Canada whose wife has a great line of border collie. They are tough and will work. Its the only kind I would fool with. If you were not so far away, I would be more than happy to give ya a pup but I am sure you can find what you are lookin for near you.
