I agree with dave 100 percent having started bear season with 5 dog and one bear put them out for 2to6 weeks. Most important thing a good bear dog needs is brains not balls you need a wheelborrow to keep from dragging. Before you can judge the dog you better judge the bear

You better find someone else to pick on dude. When I saw those dogs of him and his hunting buddies on bear, I was kind of ashamed of the footage I sent him. It was a helluva lot more impressive than anything I've watched from anyone else on this site or anywhere else for that matter.

I dont post on here much, but I have a question?
How many of the guys who dont like the high vet bills, think it is ok to shoot a Bear that is not treed, or Stopped by the dogs? Meaning a bear that is crossing the road with the dogs more than 2 seconds behind it?
Just curious.
When I catch a bear, I want to "catch" a bear. Just my preference. And If the bear doesnt tree, or get caught till I get there, the bear goes free. I wont "swat" one crossing the road.

Re: WHAT DO YOU PREFER, PULLING HAIR OR DOGS THAT BARK AT A BEAR
I for one don't think you can tree every bear either. Some bear don't tree in my opinion. Before you start saying oh you are making excuses for pussy dogs and all that consider the bears you have caught under rocks and in caves those didn't tree. We ran our hounds in Wisconsin 2 yr ago and every bear we got on was a pop up bear until the last day. He ran all over the country and the dogs finally got it stopped, but it did not tree. We had to pull the dogs off it to keep them from killing it, but it would not tree. If a bear wants to act like a hog the dogs will treat it like one and do their best to stretch it.
I have walked into the dogs on a big bears backed up to big trees or rocks and the dogs bayed up tight. Everytime the bear would try to climb the tree the dogs would grab his hind end and pull him off the wood. Same thing with one that they "hold" at bay against a rock or fallen tree root, how is he gonna climb a tree if the dogs won't let him get to one?
We had a bear last season kill one dog and wound nine more, it was killed on the ground and I don't think lack of grit was a problem.
To answer the question I prefer not to have to go to the vet each time, carry out my dogs, or bury them, but I do prefer them have enough grit to get the job done.

I'm not sure what high vet bills has to do with shooting one in the road, but I'll gladly do it and have no problem with anyone else who does. If anything your asking for vet bills because usually your not going to kill it dead on the spot, you'll cripple lots of them and you know what that leads to. If I have someone that wants to tag one they don't care if its stopped and its a lot easier to deal with in the road. Same thing for depredation hunts or if landowners want them killed, I kill them when I can and go find another one to "catch". I am able to hunt enough that I get on plenty that don't come out in a road to worry about killing a few in it.

I guess I don't understand what you are meaning by the high vet bill thing either, but I don't really see any morality problem with shooting a bear on the ground. In fact, I met some guys recently who feel just the opposite. They won't shoot any bear that trees because they feel it's too easy to do. If you have dogs that tree a bear every time you go out then it isn't too hard to have the opportunity. So therefore they only shoot a bear that stays on the ground and fights the dogs, they think it gives the bear more of a chance. That's what they think and I'm fine with that. I'm also fine with people who want to shoot one in a tree.
Really I don't think it matters either way does it? I don't kill many bear anymore, as I prefer to let them run so I can chase them another day. However, if someone wants to kill a bear I don't care whether it's done on the ground or in the tree. The end product is a dead bear.

Re: WHAT DO YOU PREFER, PULLING HAIR OR DOGS THAT BARK AT A BEAR
I think ultimately what he is saying is what is your motivation. Is it killing the bear at what ever means, or is it the dog work and them actually getting the bear stopped. I think that while there are bears that tree with the sound of the dogs those ones that are runners and don't stop do it because the dogs are sitting back barking, and the bear has no reason to stop. What I think Shane is saying is to give these bear a reason to stop they have to take risks and vet bills are going to happen. It isn't about kamakaze dogs its about opertunistic gritty dogs. In essence he is saying do you want to chase the bear or do you want to catch the bear? It is about the dog work.

Re: WHAT DO YOU PREFER, PULLING HAIR OR DOGS THAT BARK AT A BEAR
When I was guiding full time ,my hunters killed a good percentage of bears either bayed up or running in front of the dogs. I will be the first to admit that a treed bear is the best scenerio for a hunter to take a bear. You pull and tie the dogs back, everyone gets behind the shooter, hunter takes his time to make a good shot.Yes, the best way to kill a bear in my book. That being said, the kills I remember best, and the ones I talk about the most, were bayups or bears crossing a road with the dogs right behind them !! Tons more excitement to me anyways. Nothing like grabbing a couple dogs by the collars or tails and telling the hunter to shoot when you pull them out of way.Right Tobey ???
Re: WHAT DO YOU PREFER, PULLING HAIR OR DOGS THAT BARK AT A BEAR
If your purpose it to kill the bear, then why not do it at the first opportunity. The outcome will be the same. It is just the the time that is different. We had one a few years back that we were on in kill season, but we could NOT get a shot at it. It was bayed and caught for HOURS in total hellhole. We finally got so the wind was blowing in on the bear and pushed it out to a little trail where the guy blasted it. I can't remember a kill where guys were more jacked up. Our training season is where we get in our main dog work, kill season is where you try to put a jumbo on the tailgate.
I don't know about you guys but I'd prefer to shoot every one crossing a legal trail or road (or darn close to it). You hard core guys can have tipping one over miles from a road. All that turns into is work once the fun is over. I'd much rather back into the ditch and flop it in, it saves a lot more time for drinking beer.

Reed I think you hit the nail on the head. No suicidal dogs but dont want cowards either. The only thing my sorry pack will grab a holt of is a sack of dog food.
Years ago I hunted Jack Russel Terriers on coon. They had no back up in them. Coon would grab a hold of their head and the dog would just bury there face in the coon and go to killing them.
One time in oregon in the Chrome ridge area a couple of buddies of mine put a bear in a cave. One guy had some AWSOME bear dogs he was really proud of. The other buddy had one of the JRT. He got to teasing the other guy about his dogs being sissys and sent his JRT in. The JRT went in but came out in a hurry. The other guy sent in a couple of his hounds. The bear immediatly killed both of them. Not sure there is a point to this story but I wanted to tell it anyway.

So the moral to that story is a guy has nothing to prove and shouldnt let a guy "get under his skin" enough to make him do something he wasnt going to do on his own anyways.
I'd be quite pissed at myself if I wasnt bright enought to refrain from having my dogs killed over being called a pussy.
You owe it to your dogs to try not to make dumb decisions, IMO.

10-4 Buddy, We'll take your truck, dogs, cooler and burn up your gas. Can we use your gear too? Mine is a little beat up and doesn't work quite right. I'll ride shotgun (asleep mostly) and show you just how it's done. If it's OK I'll bring with a couple of rammy, green pups that you can wrangle out of the woods for me. I've got a slight limp and the Doc says I shouldn't stress it too much.
