You dont have to wait at all. Just clamp down and twist off.

I like the idea about the dew claws. I used finger nail clippers and cut them off. It worked great on some pups, espeacially when you get the joint. On other pups, you miss the joint and get soft bone. I think the forceps would alow you to find the joint a little easier.

Thanks guys, I jsut did a litter and did the tails,dew claws,and pads. What a difference it made. It was easier on the pups and like you said little to no bleeding.

I dont know. I have only done it on new borns. From what I can tell, you want to use this method when they are still very young and their skin and bones are soft from being in the womb. You can sure dock the tails later in life with a knife or nippers. But the longer you wait, it becomes more like an amputation.
