I wouldn't tolerate a black and tan crapping on my box for a second!!
Mostly because they are the size of a mule and leave a pile as big as a watermelon.
When my buddies black dogs trash he saddles them up and rides them hard all day on the mountain and that kind of takes the will to trash out of them.
The Cur guys I know say their dogs are smart enough to knock on the window when they need to crap, or the older dogs just un-snap themselves and hop off the box into the bushes.
I rig with Yorkies so the mess ain't so bad to clean up, but if those Yorkies run ground squirrels more than four times I feed 'em to my buddies Plotts.
And I make the others watch so they know I'm serious!! But hey, that's just me.

Brother, you got it all figured out. I tell ya, I am killin everything I got and getting me some Yorkie/Plott crosses. That way if they screw up, they will just eat themselves. Cut down on feed and what comes out the other end.

First off I can cull with the best of them.
Secondly our black and tans around my area are so damn slow on track that a fella doesnt even know that his dog is running a deer cause they usually are running about the same speed as a Walker when running a coon. Its sad and that aint no bullshit. But, I know there are good ones out there cause folks wouldnt own them if there wasnt, maybe.

ive owned 3 rig dogs in last 30 years that i would consider as good as any ive ever seen -- all 3 crapped on the dog box if you didnt really go out of the way to prevent it- road them a short ways then wait awhile -- went so far as to shove a match up their butt - sometimes just easier to clean it -
i felt like culling them --
never seriously considered it -
i guess i am just extra tolerant -
-- dogs that are hard to break off trash often make the best dogs in the end- -- stubborn and tough -- lots of drive-
if you work a young dog alone --push him on cold tracks-- good chance you will need to do alot of trash breaking-
if you have a straight dog to start him with-- give him something to run--
lot less problems-
i guess at times ive owned some of worlds trashiest dogs and other times some that were pretty straight
its lot easier to start pups and keep them straight when you have a decent dog to start them with - ive never bought any broke dogs and started a pack from nothing a few times -- i guess i need to know dogs history before i would make a decision to cull based on him running trash--
i had a 6 month old pup run a deer like a champ her first time out -- she was no slouch on moose her first summer -- by 11 months was a bear dog - that dog was on over 500 bear trees - sure glad i didnt cull her
if they leave a bear race to go run a deer-- well i got to admit that i did cull one for that once-

When I first got into hounds I talked to a guy who has ran dogs longer than I have been alive. I would be happy if I could catch half the game that he does. I remember he told me that if anyone tells you their dog is 100% broke he is blowing smoke up your ass. He said there is no such thing, it might be 5 years before they trash but every dog will trash.

My experience tells me that hounds are pretty easy to keep running straight as long as there is plenty of the desired game. When bears are plentiful and I can easily get a race going every day the dogs are straight as an arrow but when bears are scarce and conditions are poor and the dogs rig around for about three days without finding a bear to strike well then they get real antsy to go chase something and that is when you got to watch out.

Three Greatest Lies Ever Told:
1 - The check's in the mail
2 - Of course I'll respect you in the morning
3 - That dog never runs trash!
I gotta side with Pete, many of the hardest driving bear or lion dogs I've ever seen ran trash with just as much zeal when they were pups. One of the best dogs I've ever seen, the owner told me he wore out three shock collars breaking that dog.
That's what makes my buddy irate. If they go run trash and he can't shut 'em down, you can just see the blood pressure rising. But if it's a young dog that don't really know better, it better run that trash HARD and leave it all on the mountain or he gets even more pissed.
My rule of thumb is to believe about 10% of what a hound guy tells you and believe about 5% of what you read on these websites. (3% of what I write)

That rule hasn't let me down yet and I see by my reading this morning I have no reason to change the rule yet.

used to hunt with a guy -- had a real nice rig dog - once in awhile that dog would just blow up- he would hit the road on a dead run -- check track and run back to truck like something was chasing him -
my buddy would say --- i wanna tell ya , that track is old - lets get outa here-
some people even belived him -
i have been real lucky to get a few to the point that they ALMOST never ran trash-- when they strike, then run back to truck ,sorta scared, im not gonna tell anybody its old-- its trash - its a dog - what do u expect--
im glad that she didnt run what ever it was --and im glad she tells on herself - trained her with a dog just like her --he did the same-
sometimes they strike and just cant find it- this is different--
they have a whole different attitude -- when u can tell the difference you got it made --
ive seen 1 dog that didnt strike any trash that i know of- he was 11 when i got him-was given to me by same guy above - was worth his weight in gold to me- i got 2 years out of him --the second year , i could outwalk him - i used to turn him loose and take dummys on the leash and stay in hearing until i thought was fresh enuff for pups - perfect trainer- i wished had that dog now to start pups altho he would never tree anything --lol
