A couple of local boys that would be interesting to talk to or write about would be Hal Mecham and Shawn Labrum, as they have both lived or chased their dreams following hounds. The only problem with listening to stories from people like that is which ones to use in that article. My son has pushed me to go back to writing rather than wasting my time on these boards, and if I take that challenge you can bet that there will be some stories on those two guys.............

I no Duane Smith in Vermont has story after story to tell about bear hounds and bobcat hounds. I really enjoy listening to his storys when ever i see him, and of course pete richardson of vermont has some great memeories of past hunts also.

I am always thankful for the way hunters jump in to offer suggestions! I'm kind of green when it comes to big game hunting, I have a dream of going on a lion hunt with hounds though, so maybe this article will help give me a good insight.
Here's another question,
Would you rather read about an individual person or a strain of big game dogs?

An individual with a strain of dogs would be ideal. If it was just about the hunter then we already have Davy Crocket. Roy Clark from Del Rio, TN is a pretty good candidate. He has his own strain of plotts and they are pretty bad to the bone. Without a doubt the grittiest dogs I have ever come across. He was inducted into the American Plott Association Hall of Fame last year if I remember correctly. I have also heard of Duane Smith and his plotts and that would be interesting too. I am sure there are lots of candidates that would be hard to argue with. The hard part would be narrowing it down in my opinion. Berry Tarleton would also be a great candidate. He produced many hall of fame plotts and knows or knew a great number of the plott legends and he is always willing to talk. He is over 80 now I believe so it would be nice to see him recognized his website is housonvalleyplotts.com it has his number, address and email if you are interested.

I say nither. Id rather hear a newbies perspective. Lets hear your story. go on a hunt either bear, cat, boar, coon, ect. Id rather hear a story from somones experience rather than a 3rd partys report on somone elses.

These are names that come to mind, Warner Glenn(AZ), Charlie Leeder(UT), Van Johnson(CO), Jeff Allen(UT), Hap Blackston(NM), John Child(UT), or any of the Meachams in So. Utah. There are other greats that I could put, but those are the first that come into my mind.

PICK ME PICK ME!!
Just kidding of course. I'd scratch out anybody that's only been in hounds a decade or two and focus on those that have devoted their whole life to the sport. Mike Leonard, Van Johnson, Warner Glenn........these are among the guys I look up to.

You're all very correct, a long time big gamer with a good strain of dogs would be ideal. And I think I've got my picks. I took everyone's suggestions and checked them out, and I'm glad I'm not the one who has to choose from them! I should know soon who will be my assignment.
I would love to do a first time experience for this issue, but I don't think that will be happening at this time. I like to think of myself as a hard hunter, but we don't have any mountains here in Ohio! I'd be dead before the dogs got treed. Lol One of these days I will do an article on my first Big Game hunt though.
As far as who has been featured...off the top of my head...I don't think any of these hunters have been. So I'm thinking this article will go over well with CB readers. Or so I always hope anyway.

Ankle Express wrote:"CecilJ" - This cat has been around the block. All the experiences are there. You know "the good, the bad and the ugly" experiences. He had alot of insight and things to say but danged if we could figure out what he was really getting at about half the time. It would be a big help if somebody could relay those messages to us. For history purposes only. I'm certain he would enjoy your company and interest. You won't owe us anything for the finders fee, a little interpretation is all we're after here at the BGHF. You will need to just take a recorder. We haven't heard from him for sometime now, so according to above you know what that means, hes back hard at it and has new experiences to share! Let him know we miss him, if you find him out somewhere.
roflmao.......I'll second Cecil J. as a candidate, and bet he'd have an ear full after loosing his computer for so long!

Some pretty impressive names have been dropped, and some insults to those names as well. I would like to see a breeder that hunts his dogs and proves his line mentioned in an article. Someone that has been devoted to spending the last 25-30 years to doing his best to improve on his chosen breed, and making a full time job out of it. That said, it still baffles me the following that Mike L has on this board. Lets try and dig a little deeper than that. At least someone that hunts hounds full time, lots of em out there. Scary how people can be influenced and have the wool pulled over their eyes.

I believe an article on a dog jockey would be interesting as well, someone who moves, sells and peddles more hounds than any man in the West today?
