And I'll tell you how we get those 14 1/2 and 15 inch toms up north as well benny.....and that is stick an inner tube in the skull of a 13 1/2" tom (sub-adult) and then air it up to 101.2 psi while that skull is still green, then just wait for it to dry.......ain't that how you do it in New Mexico?

I don't think it's dry and -20 degrees in northern Ca very often if ever, snow usually goes hand in hand with those kind of temps.

It never snows in New Mexico either Larry. I'll take that back cause I drove through there last April and it snowed so hard I couldn't see the road in front of my car.....but I'll bet it doesn't stick down there is why they have so much dry ground.

A lot of guys think they know shit, they even get pretty good at preaching it. And then there are others that are so damn dumb they tell everybody their shit is so good it don't stink , but it can catch a bear or lion every day of the year because they say it can. Most know that shit won't fly. LOL!
All I know is that this is Saint Paddy's Day and I have hear so much smelly stuff on here today it would make a walker dog turn plott. I guess sort of like my old Dad use to say, surround em, and then pitch a rock or two in there, they will get chicken shit pretty soon and you will see what they are made of.

Damn some of them old dudes were pretty smart!

The thaw at noon definately can create its own set of challenges in the right circumstances, thats for sure. I prefer frozen ground to mud, but when the temps start dippin deep into the negatives, good luck. I'm talkin about freezing temps and yer talkin about Ca. big difference. I have hunted there, some of the country I was in was damn tough in places, thats for sure.

I'll try to steer us back on topic here.

I dont think one can say hounds of old are better than todays but I dont think the adverse is true either. Since ive never hunted with hounds of yester year, i'll just go but what ive read.

I do think some traits have been more or less emphasized in breeding programs today. The cold nose hound for example. With technology changing and pick-up trucks, atv's that go. the need for super cold nosed hounds has changed. A guy can hunt a whole mountain in a truck today and just look for night old tracks and do very well with medium nosed dogs on dirt or snow. In the old day's guys were stuck to where they could ride a horse or walk in day so the need to trail any track that was struck was greater.

Todays hounds are more specailized. People figured out and bred hounds for the game and country they hunt.

Todays hounds are products of better training techniques and devices (e-collars) so its much easier to train a hound today than before all the technology.

Training hounds without all this technology was much tuffer. They problably went through hounds much quicker than we do today only keeping the best. Our tech was allowed us to cure bad traits in dogs that they couldnt back then making average hounds more tolerable.

If you look at the guys who hunt full time now I bet their dogs will compare just fine of yester year. The biggest differance probably isnt the strain of hound as it is the hunter!

I hope as hound hunters that everyone is doing everything they can to improve upon the hounds they are hunting. I will agree that no one can put their hounds down a long side any of Ben Lilly’s hounds to compare or any other long past “legend.” I contend that modern Times have afforded us the ability to seek out as well as go to the best stud dog in the country that best suits the style of hunting we do. I also feel that there are great cold trailing type hounds in every breed and not just hounds that stand on their heads but hounds that can really move a cold track in bad conditions. I can say that old Ben never had to compete to get a track. The animals he ran never had hound pressure either, In fact most of them probably never even seen a hound. I am not saying this to discount him or his dogs but he never faced competition in his game, which the hunters of today do. He was it. Has big game hunting changed over the years? Absolutely. Has the style of hound changed? I think so, just look at some of the pictures from old and the design of the hounds, then go take a look at the hounds you have. I hope that everyone could honestly look at the dogs their hunting and see something that could be changed. I know for a fact There are some real hard hunters out there today, some that can really put a hound through the riggers, hunters that won’t go down in history as they stay to themselves and are not well known, because their not looking for recognition . Ben Lilly was estimated to of taken between 600-1000 lions in his life. Well if you do the math on 600. And you hunted for 30 years, that’s only 20 lions a year or about 2 a month If you had nothing better to do than hunt to make a living you could walk a hell of a long way in that month and with no one else out there to cut the track a head of you, bingo you got a caught cat. Whether or not you hunt weekends and holidays or you have the opportunities to hunt more than that, you had better be hunting something that will catch! Happy ST. Patrick’s Day :beer :beer
