It doesn't matter what you use or what style or what kind of dogs or where you hunt or how bad hogs run or don't run or whether dogs get cut or killed or live till their old and cripple just hunt and catch hogs and cull bad dogs, you will eventually determine what works for you and what you prefer in a hog dog, there is no right answer one mans cull is another mans treasure, some dogs take a while to mature and get good some are naturals and get it from day one. I have known great hog dogs that could consistently produce hogs from open mouth hounds to hound cur crosses to bird dogs, bulldogs, florida curs, etc each dog should be evaluated for his ability to produce hogs and not culled for not fitting into a standard or not having good papers, which are only good for starting a fire when it's cold.

My strike/find dogs have always been catch dogs, now I have hunted with some rcd that had some stag and they always took a lot of heat off my strike dogs!!!!!A good rcd can make a lot of races a lot shorter.I have hunted that Palo-pinto stuff in texas a few times.Once with some bay dogs that would not catch and it made for long nites with out any hogs caught. And i hunted it with my dogs and some other rcd's and we put over 20 in the horse trailer in two days!!!A good wolf stag will put speed and teeth in any good hunting dog, seen it done a lot!!!!!

The terrain that is being hunted is a huge factor. RCDs don't work in these briar thickets in East Texas. A bad hog in the wrong spot will leave you with a handful of collars to bring back to the truck.

Most people will concentrate on a certain type or breed or style of dog and miss opportunities to get great dogs. I've seen open mouth hounds stop and bay up a hog within 100 yards and the grittiest running catch dogs that couldn't find a biscuit in a dog box. A better way to do it is to let someone show you what the dogs can do. I've seen a kennel full of silent finished out bird/bull crosses that couldn't find a hog when dumped onto a pile of fresh sign. I've seen hounds that will jump a hog every time they are dropped out of the truck. Just saying.

Top Picture- Two Ozzy's that were kind enough to take me out with their dogs while I was in Australia. The red dog is a pup and the other is the old dog. They only turn loose one old dog at a time and a pup. The Dogs strike off the box with a whine and are silent trailers. The only sound you here is the pig when they catch it!!
Bottom Picture- Me on the right with another American
