Re: full moon
i bet a nasty ole lion stinks just as bad as a bear. the differance is once a lions jumped he aint goin no further than a quarter mile. a bear race might last all day and night with some griity dogs. and if your dog cant wind a lion at 50 feet there is a problem i dont care what your conditions are

Re: full moon
Well i know lions just don't run 1/4 mile and quit, I've seen lions go for miles, last year we treed bear within 1/4 mile, so it ain't the type of animal that matters there partner. I don't know how many cat you've been on but 1/4 miles a treat. Not saying it don't happen, just saying you can't stereotype either one. Last year we didn't chase a bear over 1/2 mile before we had it treed. 2 weeks ago my dogs chased a lion 2 miles before it ran across a highway with my dogs into wilderness sanctioned forestry. no telling how much further it went after that.
All ya can do is chase em and have a good time doing it!!

Lion hunts with clients are now done so we will be back at the capture program this week and the question asked here about moon phase has made me look at alot of the data I have kept over the past several years.
Now that we have a few lions wearing GPS collars we can go back and reference months of info gathered.
It's going to be possiable to see just what movement occured during all moon phases with these records and I'm sure it will be interesting.
Several variables will have adverse effects this I am sure , cloud cover being the main one, but that may also be something we can figure out from weather records and focus more on when conditions allow for the moon to be brighter.
We did find an interesting bit of info from the lion that was killed in Nov. in Montana...he slept and was inactive alot more than I would have ever thought!!!!
It has also provided a very good pattern as to when lions are at peek hours of movement and when they are the least active.
