Broke
Re: Broke
I am sure some of these other hunters have better answers than me. I just found myself in the situation recently. Where I origionally went wrong was, giving young dogs permission to freely strike, then allowing them to help start. I knew better, in the past it didnt work for me. Not this time either. have a good day. John.

Re: Broke
My dogs will piss on a cat piss bush more than they will on a coyote one. The males are the ones that piss on a coyote bush the females will piss on a cat bush. I broke a really good strike dog from striking cats trying to break her from hitting coyote bushes, she would not run them just strike them. Figure out what you can live with or without before you get to carried away. Sometimes it back fires. Dewey

Re: Broke
I am not sure what people mean by a broke dog? A check dog to me is one that checks out what other dogs are running and does not run off game. I have owned very few that would check a 100% all the time all off game. It is pretty easy to get them off deer and elk but to keep them off when you run them with other peoples dogs is hard to do. I seen good clean dogs sold and in a few months be running off game in the wrong hands. Running what you want to run is up to the hunter not the dog. If you expect the dog to get it right all the time or any of the time you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It is up to you to run the right game not the dog. Dewey

Re: Broke
Mr Dewey, I agree. Our disapointments are in proportion with our expectations in all of life. If we don't set our expectations too high, we are thrilled when things go right. In a period of over 60 years running bobcats with hounds ,solid broke, check dogs have been few and far between, in my neck of the woods. Having said this, I have seen many hounds that were sucessful in , both running cats and giving their owners much pleasure. Enjoy the pleasures and blessings in life and take the few disapointments in stride. Lifes too short to be tense about any thing, except waiting on the hounds to make a pick-up in a good hot cat race. I'll hush now.
Re: Broke
What broke means to me is having a pile of dogs and a family...........That is BROKE! Other then that there is no such thing, Just BENT and there are many different variations of the word. If everyone did like they were supposed to here in oregon and laid their dogs up ( in the past ), then every single person who turnes a dog loose at the begining of every year would have some sort of a " trash race ". Who cares, let em run it and get it out of em and then go get em on what you intend to run. I will always take a dog that is gamey or has drive and leave it up to myself to focus that drive, I do NOT want a dog that does not want to go. You cant teach heart and you cant teach drive or a dog to be gamey but, you can teach a gamey dog to focus on the things you want it to.

Re: Broke
Hunters that put their time in, know their dogs, take it serious, and teach themselves to listen for small details. Know what their dogs are on, a bad track might slip by here or there but as the exception. It takes time to break a dog, If a hunter pushes a dog to hard you run the risk of doing more damage than good. confidence in its hunter, itself , and its surroundings are very important. But at the same time a hunter cant let their dogs run wild, to much freedom and a dog may alway's be a little on the trashy side. And then every dog can be different. It isnt easy. I have heard our dogs described as tools, I agree with that, for a tool to keep working right it needs proper consistant maintenance. Just like our dogs. We wouldnt break one of our tools and then expect it to work better. Just something to think about next time you set out to break your dog.
Anytime we change something in our hunting style, routine, truck, new dog, hunting buddy, dog box, truck to 4-wheeler..etc. We run the risk of confusing our dogs, a confused dog is more prone to make a mistake. Mistakes happen, recognising and dealing with them is what seperates one houndsmen from another. Just like Dewey said so well. It is up to you to run the right game not the dog. An old wise houndsmen told me once" Its not what I did to make that hound-Its more what I didnt do. thankyou John.
