There are good dobermans still coming out of Europe. Look at some of the police k9 magazines or web sites and talk to dog vendors who bring dogs over from europe. They still have some geneticaly strong dogs coming over.

The Goswicks used to cross dobermans with their hounds and some of their good lion dogs came from these crosses. Prior to having thier ears cropped, they have a similar appearance to a B&T hound.

I think that what ever you want, there is a hound out there that will do it. Maybee less years spent breeding to or geting a pup from that dog than trying to build from scratch. It could be fun to invent your own dog if you have the time (are young) and dog food.JMO. Good luck.

redneck
those are dogos not ridgebacks
trust me i'm the guy on the far left in the pic second from bottom. the dogos' owner is the huge guy on the far right. the two paying hunters in the middle were from KS.

From what I have seen, a balls to the wall bear dog will just have you spending more time at the vet than catching bears. I have a couple of those suicide dogs, they have been hurt most of the year, I have caught a lot more bears with my smarter dogs, that know how to get out of the way and still put pressure on a bear, than the "suicide" dogs that have spent most of the season recovering from injuries. I will take the smart dog over the "suicide" dog anyday, vet bills suck! A dog doesnt have to jump down a bears throat in order to put one in a tree.

also dogos are catchdogs and will try to catch the bear. not a huge deal if you have 3 of them and they hit at the same time. but if they string out and hit one at a time you could wind up burying dogs.
not a bad idea to cross off them as there are plenty of lanky gyps that'll throw a fair runner if crossed to something w/some leg & bottom like a running walker or trigg. be a lot of heat in a cross like that and the size to back it up.

very good advise well taken. I think my main three lion dogs are finall doing just that! I treed 2 big bears and shut one down completely on the ground this weekend with just my three main dogs I've always had. it has just taken dumping them over and over for a couple years and now it just started clicking! bear #1, 2 min from jump to bay to tree, bear 2, 20 min bayup resulting in a tree. not a scratch on the dogs! smart, not mean! I think maybe my dogs have been reading the forum and seeing that I called them a bunch of pussies they decided to step it up! I noticed that my early, cool morning, fresh rigs are resulting in losses, but my late morning and early afternoon grinding cold trails for 2 hrs are the ones I'm puttin up? any theories????? it makes absolutely no sense to me. also my one year old pup is the first to get there now, first one to locate and tree. I never used to turn him out, but now it seems like he is doing alot of the work once its jumped?????

Yeah houndnem that's just what you need a new PET lol !!!!! Yeah i bet they got some real bear dogs considering they breed cats for a living as well as their companion dogs!!!! Those dogs would overheat in a short amount of time anyhow.. LOL Come on redneck are you serious do some research before you go spouting off with all your "this is what you need" statements!!!! What he needs is a REAL BEAR DOG!!!! IMO

no doubt dc! Ya can't catch many down here without a real bear dog. AS a cat hunter I never knew what people meant by that. I now I know what a beardog is. my cat dogs actually are making the switch after 3 years of hell. two of the last 3 I dumped on bayed then climbed! both big boars that normally would have chased my dogs back to the truck. funniest part is it was my 1 year old king pup that figured out the biting em up a tree part! the rest could rig cold trail and bay for a while, but it took a dog figuring the right amount of pressure before they started to climb. I'm still not where I want to be with my dogs on bear, but this year has brought us leaps and bounds from where we were before. It's only gona get better from here!

10-4 Houndnem glad your getting some up!! I know how you feel as im in the same boat, i had to sale one of my better bear dogs this year which sucks but sometimes you gotta do things that you dont want too. Hopefully this season i will have a couple kick it up a notch, as i think i will because i got some good prospects that are showing good qualities.. Only time will tell, were getting closer and i cant wait for season. Good luck and happy hunting!!
