Pete: I have taken the time in the past few days to do some research on this . It is certainly going to be growing into a bigger problem than it is now.
While certainly not being a Professional wildlife expert, I do find it interesting how much 1/2 truths lies and induendo information is out there as proposed by the Hug a tree crowd and Pro-wolfers. It makes you wonder actually how much time these characters do spend out in the woods ????

It does seem kind of strange but for all their propaganda I can't find much reasoning WHY they should be re-introduced.
I have no problem with CERTAIN SPECIES being re-introduced,witness what has been done in Northern ME. NH VT, NY with the turkeys and PA and even KY with the ELK Great accomplishments and I do applaude them. None of these really affect houndsman but I do not feel the same about wolves.
Not just this forum and particularly this thread but wolves out west have certainly created a lot of problems our PROFESSIONALS and HUG-A-TREE people did not anticipate . Reduction in Harvestable game animals is down across the board where wolves are now present.Deer,Elk,etc;
You mentioned LOCKED GATES I hope to NEVER see that day . I guess we should be lucky at least in the New England States That between National forests ,Paper Co and Private lands we still have the oppurtunity to pursue our interests . If the Hug-a-tree crowd has their way with the wolves who knows what we will be looking at. I consider myself to be lucky enough to have hunted from Maine to BC.Many of these have been chasing game with hounds . And YES I do really enjoy my MAINE hunting . Hard to beat Deer camp with all that goes on with your hunting buddies.
Not trying to editorialze here BUT We must really be concerned about our future and particularly hound hunting. Over the years I have tried to instill in my son ,daughter,grandsons, and grand-daughters an appreciation of ALL outdoor activities Hunting ,Fishing ,Trapping and Hounding While they do have their own interests and I greatly support their activities it does kind of sadden me that most other kids parents when you invite them to go fishing it is not a problem ,but when you mention hunting ,trapping or hounding it seems to raise issues.
I am not sure what the answer is to that problem . Don't want to ruffell any feathers here but we are seeing a reduction in the numbers in participation of our favorite pursuit HOUNDING I do not know if that is from the ATTRITION of the OLDER GUY's passing on ,retiring from the sport, economy or whatever .Most all states past few years are showing a decrease in license sales to pursue our interests?? If you really think about it ,How many NEWBIES do you know that have come into the sport and STAYED there more than 5 years .I hope I am wrong but The numbers I don't imagine are tooo high. TOO many other interests for the YOUTHS of today. We have always tried to live a Rualish lifestyle as opposed to Urban lifestyle. I just do not see the numbers increasing.To me having hounds is like making a Major committment to a wife or having kids lots of time dedication and money goes into it.

Good thoughts there. I have said ever since they reintroduced wolves to yellowstone, that their ultimate motive, is to drastically reduce game numbers and then use that as a reason to outlaw hunting. Then, we supposedly won't need our guns any more, and will loose them also. Ever since the guns of autumn aired on tv in 1976, hunters have stuck their heads in the sand hoping this movement would go away. If we wait much longer it will be bigger than us. All we will have left then will be memories and pictures. It's an absolute shame!

Liontracker: I have had those same thoughts. Ultimately I belive that is what they want to accomplish .Look at what the lib's have done in Europe the past 5 years . Hell look at what we have lost in the past 20 years here. Not trying to be a radical but " WAKE UP AMERICA " That is the direction we are headed in. some of the houndsman i know-- are more wildlife experts than they are given credit for- they didnt learn it from a book--- or maybe they did read the book-- and have some serious , in the woods experience to go with the book -- they seem to have a more practical or real attitude-

there is no future in running hounds. grandson is 8yrs. old and loves coon huntin and runnin bobcat but it will end long before he is my age. seems hounds are no longer your property, you can keep them if the anti's don't complain. down town getting gas. woman see dog box, comes over, sees dog in box and asks me why i have the dog padlocked in box. i said, he's not locked in you are locked out! i was a real ba$tard.

After reading what has been posted on this topic, I thought I might put forth a post to answer many of the questions that have been put forth on it. First off, let me introduce myself. I'm a long time hunter of Plotts from the Great State of Idaho. During that time I've been forced to fight for my dogs and ways of hunting many, many times. I believe this issue of wolves has gone far past a issue of hunting. It has even become more threatening to us then even the Bear Initiative of 96. Some may even call what I'm about to present to you has a "conspiracy theory". But I will give you the facts and you can make up your own mind on that one.

The major organizations leading the wolf reintroduction is the Defenders of Wildlife. These are the people that were supposed to pay for the livestock and dogs killed by wolves. Here's a link to their website.

The other is the HSUS. The Humane Society of the United States. This is a organization that is not to be confused with the Humane Societies we have all over the US helping our pets. But this confusion is where they get most of their money to fight us. This is the biggest organization that threatens our hunting heritage today.

The wolf people have divided this great Nation into four Regions. In those regions they have already introduced three different types of wolves. There's the Rocky Mountain or Yellowstone Region that I live in. It has the Gray Wolf and this region gets the most PR. It has now grown to encompass Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Colorado.

Then there's the Great Lakes Region that also has the Gray Wolf. It now encompasses all the States around the Great Lakes and probably more.

Then there's the Southeast Region. This area has the Red Wolf. It was first introduced into North Carolina but its planned for the entire South east part of the Nation. I believe its already introduced in two other States in the Southeast.

Then there's the Blue Range Region. It is where they put the Mexican Wolf, also called the Mexican Gray Wolf. It encompasses New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. This wolf being protected by the ESA is a major stepping stone to a wall stopping illegal immigration.

Has you can see, the entire United States can soon have Wolves. If you divid this Nation into 4 parts has they did, they've already acomplished it. Those wolves will migrate just has they have to the surrounding States of Idaho. But it is my opinion the Wolves are just a tool to get a much greater reward than just having the Wolves brought back. The "war" has now become the ESA also. There's a very, very good reason the anti's are fighting so hard to keep the wolves on the ESA. Has long has the wolves remain under the protection of the ESA, the prey base of the wolves also becomes a asset to the anti's. Once the prey base reaches a certain low, then anything that threatens that prey base will be eliminated. This means your ability and heritage to hunt will be gone. This is where Idaho is just about at now. The anti's should never be under estimated in their cunning and dedication. But whats even scarier is what could very well come next. If the people of a area or the Nation can no longer hunt, then why do they need guns??? The Government can protect us all, RIGHT!!! Hope this helped answering some of the questions posted.

You hit the nail on the head there Dennis. We as hunters and gun owners are in deep trouble these next few years. I have talked to many people about the possibility of losing our gun rights. Everyone that I have talked to say that it will never happen in the U.S.. I'm here to say that people in other countries probably thought that it wouldn't happen there either. I read today on the Idaho Fish and Game web site that the US Fish and WildLife Service has posted the final rule to delist the wolf. This is suppose to take place 30 days after it is placed on the register which is suppose to take place on Jan 27th. Hopefully this time they will leave management in the hands of the state while the lawsuits are all figured out.

I also heard that they were gonna de-list the wolves, but I believe that the new president and his followers are gonna block this from happening. Yesterday they passed a law allowing 30 million non-american children to have health coverage. I wonder who's gonna pay for all this? The working man that Obama said he was gonna help out. I hope he does.
